First, Know Your Type
Before you can pick the right product, you need to understand your skin's needs. The simplest way to do this is the 'bare-face method'. [16] Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser, pat it dry, and leave it completely bare for about 30 minutes.
[16, 22] Now, observe. Does your skin feel tight and parched? It's likely dry. Does it look shiny all over? You probably have oily skin. If the shine is confined to your forehead, nose, and chin (the T-zone), you're in the combination category. And if your skin feels comfortable and balanced, congratulations, you have normal skin. [4, 12] Sensitivity is less of a type and more of a condition, often showing up as redness and irritation, and can accompany any skin type. [12, 16]
For Oily & Acne-Prone Skin
Oily skin is characterised by excess sebum, which can lead to a constant shine and clogged pores. The key is to provide hydration without adding more oil. Look for moisturisers labelled "oil-free" and "non-comedogenic" (meaning they won't clog pores). [6, 27] The best textures are lightweight gels or water-based lotions that absorb quickly. [9, 18] Key ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid, which hydrates without greasiness, and niacinamide, which can help regulate oil production and calm the skin. [6, 29] Some formulas for acne-prone skin might also include salicylic acid to help keep pores clear. [11]
For Dry & Dehydrated Skin
If your skin feels tight, rough, or flaky, it's begging for moisture. [4] For this skin type, richer is often better. Look for thicker creams and ointments that provide a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss. [2] The holy grail ingredients for dry skin are humectants, which draw water into the skin, and emollients/occlusives, which lock it in. [2] Seek out products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, and shea butter. [2, 7, 20] Ceramides are especially beneficial as they are lipids that help restore the skin's natural barrier, keeping it strong and supple. [2, 5, 20]
For Combination Skin
Combination skin can be the trickiest, with its oily T-zone and drier cheeks. [4] The goal is to find a balance. You have two main strategies: either use two different products (a lighter gel on the T-zone, a creamier lotion on the cheeks) or find a single, smart moisturiser. The best one-size-fits-all products for this type are usually lightweight, non-greasy lotions or gel-creams. [6, 18] These provide enough hydration for the dry areas without overwhelming the oily parts. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are great because they provide hydration that benefits both zones without adding oil. [6]
For Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin reacts easily, showing signs like redness, itching, or a burning sensation. [12] The mantra here is 'less is more'. [15] Opt for products with shorter ingredient lists and that are labelled "fragrance-free" and "hypoallergenic." [1, 14, 15] Look for soothing and calming ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, colloidal oatmeal, and squalane. [7, 8, 15] Ceramides and hyaluronic acid are also excellent choices as they support the skin's barrier and provide gentle hydration without causing irritation. [1, 5, 7, 15]
For Normal Skin
If you have normal skin, your complexion is generally balanced, with few imperfections and no severe sensitivity. The primary goal is maintenance: keeping your skin hydrated and protected. You don't need anything too heavy or overly complex. A straightforward, lightweight lotion will do the job perfectly. [3, 14] Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to maintain your skin's natural moisture balance. [3] Since your skin is already well-behaved, the focus is on preserving its healthy state.
