A Welcome Boost for a Beloved Route
The railway line connecting Mumbai to the Konkan region is one of the most picturesque and popular in India. It serves as a vital artery for daily commuters, traders, and tourists heading to the pristine beaches and tranquil towns of coastal Maharashtra
and Goa. For years, this route has faced immense pressure, with trains often running at full capacity, especially during the summer holidays and festival seasons like Ganesh Chaturthi. Recognizing this persistent demand, Central Railway has announced a new daily express train and several special services to provide much-needed relief and more options for travellers.
The New Daily CSMT-Sawantwadi Express
The centerpiece of the new offerings is a daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. This service was launched in early September 2026 to address the strong demand for direct connectivity to South Konkan. The train is composed of modern LHB coaches, including a mix of AC First Class, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper, and general second-class coaches, catering to various budgets. While the regular schedule is yet to be announced, the inaugural special was flagged off to offer immediate capacity on the route.
Key Stops and Enhanced Connectivity
The new daily service from CSMT to Sawantwadi Road includes stops at major Mumbai suburban stations like Dadar and Thane before proceeding to Panvel, Roha, Chiplun, and Ratnagiri. Crucially, it extends deep into the South Konkan region with halts at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, providing direct access to towns that previously had limited daily connections from Mumbai. This is expected to not only benefit local residents but also significantly boost tourism to destinations like Tarkarli and Amboli, as well as the popular Goa-border circuit.
Ganpati Festival Special Services
In addition to the new daily train, both Central Railway and Western Railway have announced a substantial number of special trains to manage the massive festive rush for Ganesh Chaturthi in September 2026. These services connect various terminals in Mumbai, including CSMT, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Bandra Terminus, with destinations like Madgaon, Ratnagiri, and Sawantwadi Road. For instance, Central Railway is running special services between CSMT and Madgaon on specific dates like September 11 and 13 to provide more options for Goa-bound travellers. Western Railway has also introduced 42 special trips from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus to Sawantwadi Road and Ratnagiri on various dates throughout the festival period.

With these new additions, travellers have more flexibility than ever. Bookings for all special and regular services are available through the official Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and mobile app. Given the high demand on the Konkan route, it is highly advisable to book tickets well in advance, especially for festival and holiday travel. Passengers should also check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) for real-time updates on train schedules and running status, as timings for special services can be subject to change. With a mix of premium trains like the Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Express, along with overnight options like the Konkan Kanya Express and these new services, there is an option for every type of traveller.
