Major Diversions Due to Chennai Egmore Redevelopment
The most significant update for August travellers is the temporary change in services due to the ongoing redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway Station. From August 5 to August 20, 2026, several key express trains will not operate from or to Chennai Egmore.
Instead, these services will originate from or terminate at suburban stations like Tambaram and Mambalam. This change is critical for passengers to note to avoid confusion and missed trains. The primary goal of the redevelopment is to enhance capacity and passenger facilities at the historic station. Passengers are strongly advised to verify their boarding and alighting points if they are travelling on the affected services during this period.
List of Affected Express Trains
Several popular overnight and daily express trains are impacted by the Chennai Egmore works. Trains arriving between August 5 and August 19 will be short-terminated. For instance, Train No. 16866 Thanjavur-Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express and Train No. 20636 Kollam-Chennai Egmore Ananthapuri Superfast Express will both terminate at Tambaram. Similarly, Train No. 22154 Salem-Chennai Egmore Express and Train No. 16160 Mangaluru Central-Chennai Egmore Express will also end their journeys at Tambaram. A notable exception is Train No. 12654 Tiruchchirapalli-Chennai Egmore Rockfort Express, which will terminate at Mambalam. In the reverse direction, from August 6 to August 20, the corresponding services like the Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur Uzhavan Express (Train No. 16865) and the Chennai Egmore–Kollam Ananthapuri Superfast (Train No. 20635) will originate from Tambaram instead of Egmore. Passengers should check the revised departure timings from these alternate stations.
Special Services for Onam Festival
To cater to the anticipated travel rush during the Onam festival season, Southern Railway has also announced several pairs of weekly special trains connecting Tamil Nadu with Kerala and Karnataka. These services will run on specific dates through August and into early September, providing much-needed capacity on high-demand routes. One key service is the weekly special between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore (Train No. 06126/06125). The service from Mangaluru will run every Monday until August 31, and the return service from Chennai will operate every Tuesday until September 1. These trains will serve major stops including Kozhikode, Shoranur, Palakkad, Erode, and Salem.
More Festive Routes and Extended Services
Another pair of Onam special trains will connect Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram, running four services each way during August and September. For passengers seeking more comfort, a fully air-conditioned weekly special will operate between Dr MGR Chennai Central and Kollam (Train No. 06119/06120). The train from Chennai will depart every Wednesday from August 12 to September 2. Additionally, the service of the Kanyakumari – Chennai Egmore Special (Train No. 06046) has been extended, with its last run scheduled for August 2, 2026, providing another option for travellers at the beginning of the month. Passengers on other routes can also find relief with services like the Prayagraj–Tirunelveli Special (Train No. 04171/04172) operating on weekends throughout August.
Essential Advice for August Travellers
Given the multiple changes, all passengers are advised to take a few precautionary steps. First and foremost, if your journey involves Chennai Egmore, double-check your ticket and the latest railway announcements to confirm your train's originating or terminating station. Arrive at the alternate station, such as Tambaram or Mambalam, with adequate time to spare. For those planning to travel for Onam, it is recommended to book tickets on the special services as soon as possible, as demand is expected to be extremely high. Before beginning any journey, it is always wise to use the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or website for real-time updates on train schedules and potential diversions. Planning ahead will ensure a smoother and more convenient travel experience during this busy month.
