A Landmark Digital Shift
The era of the physical visa vignette (the sticker in your passport) is over for UK-bound travellers from India. Beginning February 25, 2026, the UK fully implemented its digital immigration system. This means all successful visa applicants from India will
now receive an eVisa—a secure digital record of their permission to travel, linked directly to their passport. This change is part of the UK's broader strategy to create a fully digitised border by modernising its immigration framework, a process that has been phased in over several years and has already seen over 10 million eVisas issued globally. The key takeaway is simple: your visa is no longer in your passport, but online. Airlines will verify this digital permission before you even board your flight.
Context: The Scale of Indian Travel
This transition impacts one of the UK's largest and most important groups of visitors. In the year ending March 2026, more than 500,000 visas were granted to Indian nationals, highlighting the robust travel corridor between the two nations. Indians consistently top the charts for various UK visa categories, including study and work visas. Looking ahead, VisitBritain forecasts that visits from India will grow to nearly one million annually by 2030, with visitor spending projected to hit £1.5 billion. To support this demand, air connectivity has also been bolstered, with an average of 178 weekly flights operating between India and the UK in 2026.
The eVisa Application Process
While the final visa is digital, the application process still involves familiar steps. Indian citizens must apply online through the official GOV.UK website. The application requires details about your travel plans, finances, and personal information. A crucial point to note is that applicants will still need to attend an in-person appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometric information—fingerprints and a photograph. The main change is that you will no longer need to leave your passport at the centre for stamping. After a successful decision, you will receive an email notification and can access your eVisa through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account.
Clearing Up Confusion: ETA vs. eVisa
It is critical for Indian travellers to understand the difference between an eVisa and an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The ETA is a new pre-travel clearance requirement for nationals of countries that do not need a visa for short UK visits, such as citizens of the US, Australia, Canada, and EU countries. Indian passport holders are not eligible for the ETA scheme and must still apply for a standard UK visa, which is now issued as an eVisa. Applying for an ETA will not grant an Indian citizen permission to travel to the UK. The correct and only path is through a formal visa application.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
To ensure a smooth journey under the new system, there are a few essential steps every traveller must take. First, create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access your eVisa. Before travelling, sign in to your account and verify that all details on your eVisa, particularly your name and passport number, are 100% correct. You must travel with the same passport that is linked to your UKVI account. If you get a new passport, you must update the details in your account immediately, as a mismatch can result in being denied boarding by your airline or facing delays at the UK border.
Key Benefits and Considerations
The primary benefits of the eVisa system are security and convenience. A digital visa cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with. It also streamlines the process, as you no longer part with your passport during the processing period. Standard processing for a visitor visa typically takes around three weeks or 15 working days, although priority services are available for an extra fee. The cost for a standard visitor visa for up to six months remains around £127, with no extra charge to receive the eVisa itself. Always apply well in advance of your travel dates and be prepared for a fully digital experience from start to finish.
