The Route: An Engineering Marvel
The service runs on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental feat of engineering that cuts through the rugged Himalayan terrain. For decades, reaching Srinagar involved a strenuous road journey susceptible to weather disruptions.
This all-weather rail line, which includes engineering marvels like the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River and India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, ensures reliable connectivity. The train journey dramatically cuts travel time between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar to just under five hours, a significant improvement over the 8-11 hours previously required by road. The full link was completed in phases, with the final sections becoming operational in 2025 and direct Jammu services starting in April 2026.
Your Vande Bharat Experience
The Vande Bharat train for the Kashmir route is specially designed for the region's climate. It features advanced heating systems to prevent water lines from freezing in sub-zero temperatures and heated windshields for clear visibility, ensuring smooth operations even during harsh winters. Onboard, passengers can expect the standard Vande Bharat comforts: fully air-conditioned coaches, rotating seats, large windows for panoramic views, Wi-Fi, and onboard catering. The train offers two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter providing wider, more spacious seating. Due to high demand, the trains were expanded from 16 to 20 coaches.
Schedule and Key Halts
As of August 2026, there are two pairs of Vande Bharat trains running daily services between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. For example, Train 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM, running six days a week (except Tuesdays). The return train (26402) leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Jammu by 6:50 PM. Key stops along the route include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal. A third Vande Bharat service has also been approved, which will include a stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station), further boosting connectivity.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking your journey is straightforward. Tickets can be booked up to 60 days in advance via the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. To book, you'll need to enter the station codes: Jammu Tawi (JAT) and Srinagar (SINA). Be sure to select the correct Srinagar station (SINA) to avoid confusion. After selecting your travel date and train, choose your class (CC or EC) and proceed to payment. Fares for the AC Chair Car are approximately ₹715 to ₹880, while Executive Chair Car tickets range from ₹1,320 to ₹1,515. Given the service's popularity, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially for the return journey from Srinagar, which sees very high demand.
Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make the most of your trip, keep a few tips in mind. For the best views of the Chenab Bridge, try to get a window seat on the right side of the train when travelling from Jammu to Srinagar. The left side offers better vistas of the Pir Panjal range after Banihal. Always carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it will be checked during the journey. Mobile signals can be patchy, particularly inside the long tunnels like the 11-km Pir Panjal tunnel, so it's a good idea to download any entertainment beforehand. Upon arriving at Srinagar Railway Station (Nowgam), you can find pre-paid taxis and other local transport options to reach popular destinations like Dal Lake and your hotel.
Planning Your Srinagar Itinerary
With the train making travel to Srinagar faster and more reliable, planning your Kashmir itinerary has become much easier. The city is a hub for some of the most iconic sights in the valley. A shikara ride on Dal Lake at sunset is an unmissable experience. You can also visit the famous Mughal gardens like Cheshma Shahi and the Tulip Garden, which is one of the largest in the world. The train's direct connectivity from pilgrimage sites like Katra is also expected to significantly boost tourism. This new service opens up opportunities for weekend trips and more spontaneous travel plans to experience the paradise that is Kashmir.
