Attack Details Emerge
In a deeply unsettling turn of events, Chandranath Rath, a personal assistant closely associated with influential BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, met a tragic
end. The incident occurred late on a Wednesday night in Madhyamgram, located within the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Unidentified assailants reportedly ambushed Rath while he was inside his vehicle. According to initial police reports, Rath was shot and subsequently rushed to a local hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that another person traveling with Rath in the same vehicle also sustained injuries and was immediately taken for medical attention. The Barasat police district has launched a comprehensive investigation to apprehend the culprits responsible for this act of violence, seeking to understand the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
Political Context and Aftermath
This violent incident casts a shadow over the recent political landscape in West Bengal, occurring just two days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a significant victory in the state assembly elections, securing 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to 80. Suvendu Adhikari himself played a pivotal role in the election outcomes, notably defeating TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, a seat traditionally held by the outgoing Chief Minister. The upcoming oath-taking ceremony in Kolkata on May 9 was slated to be attended by top BJP figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In the wake of this shooting, senior police officials and BJP leaders, including Adhikari, were reportedly en route to the scene to gather more information. Rath was known to be instrumental in managing Adhikari's election campaigns in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, constituencies from which Adhikari emerged victorious.
Eyewitness Account and Motive
Further details emerging from the scene paint a grim picture of the attack. According to Koustav Bagchi, a BJP leader who spoke to the media, the vehicle carrying Chandranath Rath was being pursued by unidentified individuals on motorcycles. The assailants reportedly intercepted Rath's car near Doharia in Madhyamgram, opening fire indiscriminately while Rath remained inside the vehicle. The motive behind this targeted killing remains a subject of intense investigation. While the BJP has pointed fingers towards the ruling Trinamool Congress, the TMC has firmly denied any involvement in the incident. The police are actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators and understand the underlying reasons for this shocking act of violence that has shaken the political circles in West Bengal.
