A Ray of Hope
Kewal Kaur, a 65-year-old from Hoshiarpur's Hoshiarpur district, experienced a profound transformation on April 17th, marking a new chapter in her life.
For years, she endured relentless knee pain, drastically limiting her mobility and turning daily life into an arduous challenge. The inability to walk without a cane and the constant struggle against discomfort had become her reality. Thankfully, the Bhagwant Mann government's Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana stepped in, enabling her to undergo a crucial knee replacement surgery at the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Jalandhar. This critical procedure, which would have otherwise cost an estimated Rs 1.5 lakh, was provided entirely free of charge, lifting a significant financial burden off her family and restoring her ability to move with newfound ease and dignity.
The Path to Recovery
Mandeep Singh, Kewal Kaur's son and a farmer, recounted the five-year ordeal his mother faced with debilitating knee pain. Despite consulting numerous doctors and trying various treatments, no lasting relief was found, leading to a worsening condition where she could barely take a single step unassisted. The necessity for surgery became undeniable. Mandeep's timely registration for a health card under the scheme, read about in a newspaper, proved pivotal. Following hospital procedures, Dr. Anit Sachar and his dedicated team performed the complex surgery, lasting approximately two hours, on April 17th. As Kewal Kaur begins her recovery, the pervasive pain that once dominated her days is gradually subsiding, replaced by a profound sense of relief and a smile that had been absent for far too long. The successful surgery signifies not just a medical procedure but a significant restoration of her self-worth and independence.
Beyond the Surgery
Kewal Kaur expressed her deep gratitude, considering Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann a paternal figure for facilitating her life-altering surgery without any personal expense. She feels liberated from being a dependency, anticipating a significantly easier life ahead. For Mandeep, the scheme offered more than just medical treatment; it was a restoration of his mother's dignity and independence. While he could have offered financial support given his children live abroad, the scheme provided an invaluable sense of autonomy for his mother. He also shared that Kewal Kaur was not an isolated case; approximately five other elderly individuals from areas like Mohali and Hoshiarpur received similar free knee surgeries under the same Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. The minimal initial test expenses, around Rs 2,400, were the only costs incurred, with the rest of the comprehensive treatment being completely free, highlighting the scheme's extensive coverage up to Rs 10 lakh, a true blessing for middle and lower-income families.
