Affordable Medicines Revolution
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) has achieved a national milestone by establishing its 14th AMRIT pharmacy, the highest
number of such facilities within any public sector hospital across India. This extensive network underscores PGI's dedication to enhancing patient care through accessible and affordable treatment options. Professor Vivek Lal, the director of PGI, has lauded the AMRIT initiative as a substantial enhancement for patient services, likening it to a 'big shot in the arm'. He further emphasized that while the Ayushman Bharat scheme provides the broad support for the immense patient volume at PGI, the AMRIT pharmacies act as the fundamental structure, ensuring that the cost of treatment remains manageable for all patients. The core principle behind AMRIT is to guarantee that every individual receives quality medicines without financial strain, thereby solidifying its position as a critical component of the institute's patient-centric approach.
Ayushman Bharat Synergy
The Ayushman Bharat scheme plays a pivotal role in facilitating broad access to healthcare services and managing the substantial patient influx at PGI. Complementing this governmental initiative, the AMRIT pharmacies serve as a vital support system by making essential medicines readily available and affordable. This synergistic relationship ensures that financial barriers do not impede patients from receiving necessary medical treatment. Professor Lal highlighted that the AMRIT outlets offer medicines from established, reputable manufacturers at considerably reduced prices, significantly easing the financial burden on patients. This accessibility is crucial, particularly for those relying on the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring that their healthcare journey is supported at every step. The strategic placement of these pharmacies, including 24×7 availability in high-demand areas like cardiology and emergency services, further underscores the commitment to uninterrupted patient welfare.
Expansion and Improvement
With 14 AMRIT pharmacies already operational and providing essential services, PGI is not resting on its laurels. Plans are underway to introduce an additional two to three outlets to further extend the reach of affordable medicines to the last mile. This expansion is particularly focused on critical areas that experience a high patient load, such as cardiology and emergency departments, where 24×7 accessibility will be prioritized. Professor Lal reiterated that the AMRIT initiative is fundamentally a patient welfare movement, rather than a commercial venture, emphasizing its non-profit nature. While acknowledging that no system is flawless, PGI is actively engaged in addressing operational challenges, including potential availability gaps and delays in refund processing. Continuous communication with the relevant ministry is ongoing to refine and streamline these processes, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability for the benefit of all patients, especially those covered under Ayushman Bharat.
Strengthening Infrastructure
PGI's commitment to advancing patient care is further evidenced by its continuous efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and systems. The institute, a beacon of medical care since 1963, strives to match global standards in service delivery. Recent institutional reforms have tackled ingrained resistance to change, making ambitious projects like extending AMRIT services to critical care areas a reality. These transformations, though often subtle, significantly enhance the daily experience and outcomes for patients. The proactive streamlining of administrative and financial processes has been instrumental in facilitating faster procurement and improving the overall efficiency of service delivery, directly contributing to the expansion and enhanced functionality of the AMRIT outlets. Upcoming inaugurations of major facilities, including the Neurosciences Centre and Critical Care Centre, during the Union Health Minister's visit, promise to further augment PGI's capacity to serve an ever-increasing patient population.
