Playful Beginnings, Naughty Cub
The early days of Maya, known then as P2, were filled with an irrepressible spirit and a penchant for playful mischief that often tested the patience of her
siblings and even the forest staff. Her restless nature led her to engage in pranks, making her stand out among her littermates. A notable incident occurred during Buddha Purnima, a significant night for forest personnel monitoring wildlife near waterholes. While her mother, Leela, and siblings rested, P2 was drawn to a nearby observation tower (machan). Her attempt to climb a mahua tree adjacent to the structure caused a stir among the staff, who prepared to alert superiors. Fortunately, a timely call from Leela interrupted P2’s ascent, leading to a collective sigh of relief from the observers. Another instance showcased her audacious curiosity when she approached parked tourist vehicles. Unfazed by the human presence, she confidently crossed the road and, spotting a forest guard's lunchbox dangling from his motorcycle, deftly snatched it. This bold act, repeated on subsequent occasions, highlighted her fearlessness and developing assertiveness, earning her admiration from staff, photographers, and tourists alike, who were captivated by her unique personality and willingness to pose for cameras, even at such a tender age.
First Solo Hunt Triumph
As summer intensified in 2012, Maya, no longer solely reliant on her mother, began her independent explorations, eventually venturing to the Ambepat waterhole. While a tourist jeep observed her tranquil presence, a dramatic shift occurred with the arrival of a large wild boar. Mirroring hunting techniques she had witnessed her mother employ, Maya initiated a stalk from the water. The boar, seemingly unaware of the impending threat, continued its approach. Maya remained poised, her gaze fixed on her quarry. When the boar came within striking range, she launched herself from the water, landing on its back with a sudden burst. Despite the boar's fierce struggles to dislodge her, Maya's grip was tenacious, her claws digging deep and teeth finding their mark on its neck. This encounter, a gruelling 45-minute battle, pitted the young, relatively inexperienced Maya against a powerful, adult boar. Though she lacked the precise killing technique, her sheer determination and relentless pursuit were evident. In a decisive move, she managed to flip the boar and secure a grip on its throat, ultimately emerging victorious. This gruelling first major solo kill demonstrated her innate aggression, unwavering courage, and resilience, traits that distinguished her from her siblings and marked a pivotal moment in her journey to becoming the dominant tigress of Tadoba.
