Myanmar Seismic Event
On a recent Tuesday evening, at precisely 9:04 pm Indian Standard Time, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 jolted Myanmar. Data from the German
Research Centre for Geosciences pinpointed the tremor's origin at a depth of 55 kilometers, with its epicentre situated at 20.51°N latitude and 93.96°E longitude. This initial seismic activity was followed by a second, albeit less intense, tremor recorded at 9:21:29 pm IST. This subsequent event occurred at a slightly shallower depth of 50 kilometers, according to the same scientific institution. While the seismic activity was notable, there have been no immediate reports of casualties associated with this event in Myanmar.
Kolkata Feels Tremors
The seismic waves from the Myanmar earthquake were not confined to its origin country; strong tremors were widely felt in Kolkata, a city located hundreds of kilometers away. Social media platforms buzzed with eyewitness accounts of the ground shaking. Residents shared their experiences, with one user on X describing the unsettling sensation of their 'whole restaurant was shaking in Park Street.' Another user posted a question, seeking confirmation from others: 'Earthquake in Kolkata? Did anyone else feel it?' These personal testimonies highlight the widespread nature of the tremor and the shared experience of unease among the city's inhabitants who felt the earth move beneath them.
Related Seismic Activity
Interestingly, this significant earthquake in Myanmar occurred on the same day that another seismic event was registered in Bangladesh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 striking Bangladesh earlier that Tuesday. This particular tremor occurred at a considerably greater depth of 150 kilometers, as stated by the NCS. The seismological agency provided precise details for this event, noting its occurrence at 04:06:46 IST on February 3, 2026, with its epicentre located at 22.84°N latitude and 89.01°E longitude. While distinct in magnitude and depth from the Myanmar earthquake, this occurrence in Bangladesh underscores a period of heightened seismic activity in the broader region.
