Threatening Phone Calls
The events unfolded between September 22 and 23, when Kapil Sharma received approximately seven threatening phone calls. The individual responsible, identified
as Dilip Choudhary, allegedly demanded ₹1 crore from the comedian. Officials confirmed that along with the calls, Sharma also received threatening videos. These actions prompted immediate police action and subsequent investigation into the matter. The Mumbai Crime Branch swiftly responded, leading to the arrest of Choudhary. The police are also exploring the possibility of any direct connections between Choudhary and the gangsters or whether he was merely using their names for intimidation and extortion. The accused has been placed in police custody until September 30, as investigations continue.
The Accused Apprehended
The man arrested in connection with the extortion calls hails from West Bengal, as confirmed by the Mumbai Police. Dilip Choudhary was taken into custody for the threatening actions directed towards Kapil Sharma. The police are probing Choudhary's motives and whether he acted independently or was associated with any criminal networks. The investigation is ongoing to fully understand the extent of the threat and any potential links. The Mumbai Police have focused on all aspects of the case, ensuring every detail is examined. The authorities aim to determine if Choudhary was working alone or was influenced or directed by other entities. The case has brought attention to the security measures taken by public figures.
Gangster's Names Used
The threats made to Kapil Sharma were issued under the guise of two known gangsters, Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar. Dilip Choudhary employed their names to instill fear and pressure Sharma into complying with his demands. This tactic highlights the strategies used to intimidate victims in extortion schemes. The police are scrutinizing whether these gangster's names were used without their actual involvement or knowledge. The investigation seeks to determine the true nature of the connection, if any, between Choudhary and the individuals. The use of the gangsters’ names underscores the seriousness of the threat and the potential risks associated with such incidents. The investigation also involves exploring the history and activities of Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar, to find any links.
MNS Issues Warning
Beyond the extortion case, Kapil Sharma's show, 'The Great Indian Kapil Show,' received a warning from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The warning was issued because the show referred to Mumbai as 'Bombay.' MNS leader Ameya Khopkar expressed disapproval of using the old name, especially as Mumbai has been officially recognized since 1995 by the Maharashtra Government and 1996 by the Central Government, prior to cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Khopkar issued a request-cum-warning on his social media, asking for Mumbai to be respected and correctly referred to as Mumbai. This issue underscores the cultural and historical sensitivities attached to the city's name and identity.
