Tragic Demise Identified
In a deeply unsettling case that has gripped Mumbai, the mysterious deaths of four individuals from the Dokadia family in the Bhendi Bazaar area have been
attributed to a common, yet lethal, cause: rat poison. Recent toxicology and scientific analyses conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory have provided a definitive answer. The reports unequivocally confirmed the presence of zinc phosphide, a potent rodenticide, not only within the biological samples of the deceased but also in a watermelon that the family had consumed. This breakthrough brings a grim clarity to the events that unfolded, shifting the focus from speculation to a confirmed accidental poisoning scenario. The investigation is now proceeding with a clearer understanding of the fatal agent involved, aiming to complete the picture surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
Forensic Findings Unveiled
The comprehensive forensic reports, received by investigators, paint a stark picture of the tragic events. Specifically, the toxicology analysis detected zinc phosphide in crucial internal samples from all four deceased family members, including their viscera – liver, kidney, and spleen – as well as stomach contents, bile, and abdominal fat. Crucially, the same harmful substance was also positively identified in the watermelon sample that was tested. This dual confirmation provides an irrefutable link between the fruit consumed and the fatal poisoning. It is also significant that all other food items examined were found to be free of zinc phosphide, narrowing down the source of contamination to the watermelon. Prior to this, a microbiology report from JJ Hospital had found no signs of bacterial infection, ruling out another potential cause for the sudden deterioration of the family's health.
Incident Timeline and Investigation
The sequence of events leading to the family's illness and subsequent deaths began on the night of April 25th. According to family accounts, the Dokadia family had hosted a gathering, with relatives departing around 10:00 to 10:30 p.m. Later, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the host family consumed watermelon. Shortly after, Naseerin Dokadia (35), Ayesha Dokadia (16), Abdullah Dokadia (44), and Zainab Dokadia (12) began experiencing severe vomiting, indicating a rapid onset of illness. Their conditions deteriorated swiftly, leading to their admissions to different hospitals on April 26th, followed by their untimely deaths. In the wake of this tragedy, the Mumbai Police have been diligently conducting their investigation, recording statements from over 10 individuals connected to the case. This includes those who initially fell ill, the attending local doctor, relatives who were present, and the vendor who supplied the watermelon, ensuring all potential leads are explored as the case is officially treated as an unnatural death.
