Joyful Garden Excursion
In a heartwarming display of care, approximately a dozen pediatric cancer patients, aged between 4 and 18 years, embarked on a unique and uplifting journey
to Srinagar's renowned Tulip Garden. This special outing was orchestrated by the Sher-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS), with the express purpose of offering these young warriors a refreshing and positive outdoor experience. SKIMS recognizes the profound impact such excursions can have on patients, suggesting that engaging with nature can significantly reduce stress levels and contribute to bolstering their immune systems during challenging treatments. The children were accompanied by a dedicated medical team, comprising senior faculty, medical officers, and resident doctors, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the event. To further enhance the experience, the Department of Floriculture kindly provided complimentary entry and refreshments, making the day even more special for the participants.
Nature's Healing Embrace
The timing of this delightful outing was meticulously planned to coincide with the children's chemotherapy schedules, ensuring that their vital treatment regimens were uninterrupted while still allowing them a much-needed respite from the clinical hospital environment. As the young patients traveled from SKIMS along the picturesque Dal Lake, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The journey, flagged off by SKIMS Director Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, marked a significant milestone as it represented SKIMS's inaugural therapeutic garden visit for these children. What began as a relatively quiet bus ride from the hospital soon transformed into an atmosphere brimming with laughter and excitement. The children, some subtly masked, but all with a spark of wonder in their eyes, lit up at the breathtaking sight of the thousands of tulips in full bloom. Subsequent photographs captured the group sharing smiles and creating cherished memories, a stark and welcome contrast to the typical hospital wards they inhabit.
Boosting Immunity and Morale
SKIMS Director Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie emphasized the profound significance of this initiative, stating, "This outing is part of our immunotherapy efforts to strengthen their immune systems with hope, optimism, and positivity." He elaborated on the scientific underpinnings, explaining that positive emotional experiences can positively influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, thereby enhancing emotional well-being. Prof. Ganie further highlighted the crucial role of the body's internal immunity in combating not only infections but also cancer cells, suggesting that such boosts can make treatments considerably more effective. The doctors who accompanied the children reported an immediate and positive shift in their moods, noting, "The children were very happy. It reassures them and their families that this is something they can fight." Looking ahead, the hospital plans to extend similar nature-based therapeutic experiences to more cancer survivors and children dealing with diabetes, further demonstrating their commitment to harnessing nature's healing potential for broader patient groups.
