Unwavering Resilience Shines
The tourism landscape in the Kashmir Valley is demonstrating extraordinary resilience, with projections indicating that 2026 visitor statistics will eclipse
all prior benchmarks. This powerful resurgence follows a tumultuous period in 2025, which was shadowed by security apprehensions, including a significant terror incident in Pahalgam during April of that year. Despite facing such challenges, iconic destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are currently experiencing near-complete hotel occupancy. This vibrant recovery is largely attributed to a substantial influx of domestic travelers and the implementation of fortified security protocols, which have been instrumental in bolstering and sustaining tourist confidence in the region.
Fortified Safety Measures
Authorities have implemented a comprehensive, multi-tiered security framework across all key tourist locales within the Kashmir Valley. This heightened security presence aims to ensure visitors feel completely safe and at ease throughout their sojourn. Increased patrols, advanced surveillance systems, and strategic security deployments are now standard at reopened sites. The return of tourists is being hailed by Union Ministers as a triumphant victory against nefarious elements intent on disrupting growth and fomenting division. This robust security initiative has been a cornerstone in rebuilding traveler assurance and fostering a secure environment for exploration and enjoyment.
Record-Breaking Numbers
Kashmir achieved a historic peak in 2024, welcoming approximately 98.1 lakh (9.81 million) tourists, a significant increase from previous years. Although visitor numbers experienced a dip in the Kashmir division during 2025, largely due to the impact of the Pahalgam attack, the strong bond between Kashmir and its visitors remained intact. Current occupancy rates in February 2026 are on par with those seen in March 2025. For the past three months, including the New Year period when snow graced the valley, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg have reported 100% hotel occupancy. Successful winter festivals, a major draw for global tourists, were facilitated by heavy snowfall, further enhancing the region's appeal.
Revival and Connectivity Boost
The newly operational train link connecting Srinagar to the rest of India via the Katra-Srinagar route is proving to be a pivotal catalyst for the burgeoning tourism sector. Tourism, a vital contributor, accounts for nearly 7% of Jammu and Kashmir's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and provides livelihoods for thousands across the hospitality, transport, and handicraft industries. Locals, in conjunction with governmental bodies, have spearheaded numerous initiatives and implemented various measures to restore confidence and stimulate tourist footfall. These concerted efforts have resulted in a discernible revival across the Kashmir Valley, with current visitor numbers closely mirroring last winter's successful season, signaling a robust return to form for the sector.
Visitor Endorsement
Tourists who have recently visited Kashmir have voiced their profound admiration, often stating that the region is unparalleled globally. Couples like Satya and Venkatesh, despite the cold, expressed their enjoyment during their anniversary trip, planning to visit Pahalgam next. Similarly, Nidhi, who initially harbored reservations due to safety concerns voiced by others, found the experience to be beautiful and safe, emphasizing the enjoyable snowfall. Their testimonials underscore a growing sentiment that Kashmir is not only visually stunning but also a secure destination, encouraging others to experience its unique charm and natural beauty.
