Route Error Averted
A significant operational oversight at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on a Tuesday afternoon nearly led to a serious incident. Two local trains,
bound for different platforms, were mistakenly routed onto the identical track. The train originating from Badlapur was intended for Platform 4, but an error in dispatch directed it towards Platform 5, which was already occupied by another suburban local. This misdirection immediately raised safety concerns, particularly during the bustling afternoon peak hours. Railway officials, however, assured that multiple layers of safety mechanisms functioned precisely as designed, effectively preventing any potential collision between the two rakes.
Safety Systems Engaged
Despite the alarming routing error, the situation at CSMT was swiftly managed due to the reliable functioning of the railway's safety infrastructure and the vigilance of its crew. A crucial signal between the two trains remained active, and importantly, the internal home signal for the suburban section at CSMT was displayed as red. The motorman of the incoming train, adhering strictly to this signal, brought their train to a complete halt at a safe distance. Railway authorities confirmed that the separation between the two trains was maintained at over 120 metres, ensuring no immediate danger to passengers. This timely intervention by both the signalling system and the motorman's prompt response successfully averted any risk of collision, highlighting the robustness of the safety protocols in place.
Operational Halt and Probe
In response to the near-miss incident, train operations on platforms 5 through 8 were temporarily halted around 3:18 pm as a precautionary measure to allow for the safe rectification of the situation. Central Railway's spokesperson confirmed that a thorough inquiry has been launched to meticulously investigate the sequence of events that led to the incorrect routing of the train. As a consequence of this lapse, the station master overseeing the control cabin has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The railway administration stated its commitment to understanding the precise circumstances of the error and implementing necessary corrective actions based on the inquiry's findings. Commuters did experience some delays on various suburban services while railway staff worked to restore normal operations and safely reposition the affected trains.
