Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister, Vishnu Deo Sai, has unveiled a comprehensive blueprint aimed at ushering in extensive development across the state, with
a particular focus on transforming the Bastar region. Historically identified as a stronghold of Maoist activities, the government's strategy pivots towards repositioning Bastar as a sought-after tourist destination. This ambitious plan includes significant investments in infrastructure and unique tourism packages designed to attract visitors from across the country. The Mukhyamantri Jan Tourism Promotion Scheme, a collaborative effort between the state's Tourism Department and IRCTC, is set to offer substantial financial assistance, covering 75% of costs for tourists opting for special tour packages that will link the state capital, Raipur, to Bastar, a journey spanning over 300 kilometers. This strategic shift signifies a profound commitment to redefining Bastar's identity and fostering economic opportunities through its natural and cultural wealth.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
To ensure an unparalleled experience for incoming tourists, the plan emphasizes the development of cutting-edge tourism infrastructure. Key attractions are being designed to immerse visitors in Bastar's natural splendor and offer thrilling adventures. Plans are underway for the construction of a spectacular glass bridge and an engaging canopy walk that will wind through the region's dense forests, providing breathtaking aerial views. Furthermore, the Dudhmaras village, nestled within the Kanger Valley National Park, is being developed as a hub for unique adventure activities. These developments are intended to enhance the appeal of Bastar as a destination that offers both natural beauty and exciting recreational opportunities, catering to a wide range of traveler interests and ensuring a memorable visit.
Boosting Connectivity and Access
A crucial element of Bastar's transformation strategy involves a significant upgrade in its connectivity network to ensure seamless access to its remote tourist spots. The expansion of Jagdalpur Airport is a key project aimed at facilitating air travel, while the construction of 228 new roads and 267 bridges will dramatically improve ground transportation. This enhanced network is vital for opening up previously inaccessible areas and making it easier for tourists to reach destinations like the Kanger Valley National Park and Tirathgarh Waterfalls. By investing heavily in infrastructure, the government aims to overcome geographical barriers, making Bastar more accessible and attractive to a wider audience, thereby driving tourism growth and economic development.
Theme-Based Tourism Corridors
With an annual budget of Rs 100 crore allocated to its tourism mission, Bastar is set to embrace a novel approach by developing theme-based tourism corridors. These carefully curated pathways are designed to weave together the diverse offerings of nature, culture, and spirituality that the region boasts. The corridors will connect significant sites, including the highly revered Maa Danteshwari Temple, offering visitors a cohesive and immersive journey through Bastar's rich heritage. Empowering Local Communities
Central to Bastar's revitalization is a focus on empowering its local populace through specialized training and encouraging authentic cultural engagement. The state government has initiated a dedicated tourism skill development program, successfully training 45 youths in tourism management, equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute to the burgeoning industry. Complementing this is a new home-stay policy rolled out to promote local participation and offer visitors genuine cultural experiences, particularly in the Bastar and Surguja regions. Furthermore, the new industrial policy includes incentives for tourism-related investments and a special focus on upgrading iconic sites like the Chitrakote waterfall with world-class facilities, alongside expanding security and essential services to ensure safe exploration of interior areas.
Broader Development Initiatives
Beyond tourism, the comprehensive development plan for Bastar encompasses crucial improvements in education, healthcare, and irrigation. Forty-five existing porta cabin schools are slated for an upgrade to permanent buildings, ensuring a more stable and conducive learning environment for students. In terms of healthcare, the plan includes the expansion of Primary Health Centres and the construction of transit hostels for doctors, aiming to enhance medical service accessibility in remote areas. Significant investment is also directed towards irrigation projects, with two major initiatives on the Indravati River at Deurgaon and Matnar, costing Rs 2,024 crore, projected to irrigate 31,840 hectares. These multi-faceted developments underscore a holistic approach to regional progress.
Prime Minister's Visit
The upcoming monsoon season is expected to witness a significant period for Bastar, with the Prime Minister anticipated to visit the region to lay the foundation stones and inaugurate several key projects. These pivotal developments include the much-awaited Raoghat–Jagdalpur railway line, the expansion of Jagdalpur Airport, the establishment of a Super Speciality Hospital, and a Medical College in Dantewada. Additionally, the creation of ‘Education Cities’ in Jagargunda and Orchha signifies a commitment to improving educational infrastructure. This visit, occurring shortly after the Centre's deadline to eradicate Left-Wing Extremism, marks a symbolic turning point, showcasing the region's transition and the government's commitment to its integrated development, a stark contrast to years of disruption by Maoist opposition.
