Air Corridors Take Flight
A groundbreaking report from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) outlines a vision for India's urban mobility, proposing the creation of aerial
corridors to connect key areas. A pilot project is envisioned to link Gurugram, Connaught Place, and Jewar International Airport, with the potential to reduce travel times from hours to mere minutes. This initiative is presented as a highly effective strategy to combat the pervasive issue of urban traffic congestion and is designed for scalability across the nation. The report, officially launched by Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, underscores India's aviation sector's move towards a sophisticated, multi-faceted mobility ecosystem. The core innovation highlighted is the utilization of existing rooftops as operational bases for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOLs. This forward-thinking strategy could allow buildings to become sources of additional revenue while simultaneously solving critical infrastructure challenges.
Rooftops as Landing Hubs
The innovative concept of using building rooftops as landing and parking zones for electric air taxis is a cornerstone of the CII report. This approach offers a more rapid and cost-effective alternative to establishing ground-based landing pads, a process often hampered by high land acquisition costs, especially in densely populated metropolises like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Union Minister Kinjarapu emphasized that integrating Advanced Air Mobility signifies a dedication to pioneering advancements, environmental sustainability, and superior urban connectivity. He further commented that the report furnishes a timely and practical roadmap for achieving a more efficient, eco-friendly, and interconnected India. The report acknowledges that current regulations do not yet permit routine commercial operations from rooftops. To bridge this regulatory gap, it strongly recommends the establishment of a specialized unit within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) tasked with formulating safety protocols and operational guidelines tailored for these emerging aerial technologies, ensuring a structured and secure rollout.
From Concept to Reality
Amit Dutta, Chairman of the CII Task Force on Advanced Air Mobility, articulated that the study serves as a crucial step in transforming the theoretical concept of air taxis into a tangible reality. He explained that the research meticulously analyzed a hypothetical transit route within the Delhi-NCR region through rigorous modeling and testing of various regulatory frameworks. This detailed assessment moves the initiative beyond mere conceptualization into practical operational planning. The study effectively addresses significant hurdles related to regulations, necessary infrastructure, and the management of airspace, which are all critical considerations for the successful implementation of initial Advanced Air Mobility pilot programs. Furthermore, the report suggests an initial focus on utilizing drones for transporting goods and vital medical supplies across distances ranging from 50 to 100 kilometers. Locations like GIFT City and Andhra Pradesh are identified as prime candidates for pilot testing, where more flexible regulatory environments could expedite the adoption process and pave the way for broader implementation.

To propel the growth of this nascent air mobility sector, the CII has issued a strong appeal to financial institutions and government bodies. The call is for the creation of dedicated funding mechanisms specifically designed to support the development of air mobility infrastructure. This financial backing is deemed essential for realizing the ambitious plans for aerial transportation. The report underscores that fostering this new mode of transport will require substantial investment in charging stations, maintenance facilities, and air traffic management systems. By encouraging collaboration between the banking sector and government agencies, the aim is to create a supportive financial ecosystem that can nurture innovation and accelerate the deployment of eVTOL services. This concerted effort is expected to unlock the full potential of advanced air mobility, making faster, cleaner, and more connected travel a reality for India.
