What is the story about?
Days after Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Satluj was pulled down from ZEE5 in India, gurdwaras across multiple states are planning to host screenings to ensure the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra continues to reach audiences.
Sikh religious institutions across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jammu have launched community screenings in gurdwaras after it is made unavailable within 48 hours of its release.
Insiders from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) said gurdwara committees across the country have planned community screenings of the Honey Trehan-directed film, reported Mid-Day.
In Jammu, Satluj is scheduled to be screened at four gurdwaras between July 10 and 13. A poster doing the rounds on social media invites the public to a screening on July 11 at the Baba Fateh Singh Auditorium at Chandi Ki Taksal Gurudwara in Jaipur.
Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Harmeet Singh Kalka reiterated his demand for the film’s restoration on ZEE5 and extended support to the community screening initiative.
Explaining the decision behind the screenings, an SGPC source told the publication, “The community doesn’t want this story to disappear simply because the film is unavailable online. If people cannot watch it on OTT, gurdwaras are opening their doors. Jaswant Singh Khalra’s story deserves to be seen.”
What is Satluj about
Made under the direction of Honey Trehan, the biographical drama charts one of the darkest chapters of Punjab’s militant era. It is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a Sikh human rights activist who documented the alleged illegal disappearances and secret cremations of Sikhs in the 1990s.
Satlujwas released on the OTT platform ZEE5 on July 3 after being delayed for nearly three years due to a CBFC certification issue. However, just two days after its release, the biopic was taken down from the streaming platform, citing security concerns under the Information Technology (IT) Rules.
The government was concerned that the film could trigger pro-Khalistani mobilisation or unrest, which was cited as one of the reasons behind the takedown.
The film is headlined by Diljit Dosanjh, alongside Kanwaljeet Singh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
