Ujjwal Deorao Nikam has earned a reputation as one of India’s leading special public prosecutors. Born in Jalgaon in Maharashtra, he built a legal career focused on complex criminal and terrorism cases. He has led the state’s prosecution in several landmark trials that drew national attention.
Nikam started his career as a district prosecutor in Jalgaon and then advanced to handle state and national-level trials. Throughout his 30-year legal career, he secured 628 life imprisonments and 37 death penalties.
Nikam mostly worked on cases connected to terrorism, organised crime and high-profile murder cases, including the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the Pramod Mahajan murder case and the 2008 Mumbai attacks. He also served as special public prosecutor for the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case and the 2016 Kopardi rape and murder case.
Nikam represented the Government of India at the United Nations in New York for a global convention on terrorism. He was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2016. He is currently serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha after being nominated by the President Droupadi Murmu to represent the field of law in 2025.
