What is the story about?
The Delhi High Court on Friday heard a petition filed by actor Salman Khan seeking an interim stay on the release of the proposed movie ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy’. The matter came up before the vacation bench of Justice Madhu Jain, Bar and Bench reported.
Senior advocate Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Khan, argued that the filmmakers had no right to make a film based on his life. The plea claimed violation of Khan’s personality rights. In the court, Sethi noted that the teaser had already been released and sought a stay on the film.
“We have served him, there is an affidavit of service. He should have told us. For the first time he has come here. He has no right to make a film of my life. I am seeking an interim injunction. The teaser has been released,” Sethi was cited as saying by Bar and Bench.
Counsel for the filmmakers have sought time to respond, stating they had received court papers only recently. They also told the court about facing death threats over the issue. The court directed that complete documents be supplied to the filmmakers and listed the matter for further hearing on July 1.
What is the controversy?
On June 12, the Delhi High Court had sought the response of the makers of ‘Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy’ to Salman Khan's plea seeking a stay on the film's release.
This was after Khan’s counsel earlier argued in the court that the film is purportedly based on the 1998 blackbuck poaching case allegedly involving the actor. Khan’s lawyer contended that the film’s lead character resembles and dresses like the actor. The plea further stated that the film’s poster contains an obvious reference to Khan.
Khan also told the court that the film was in violation of an earlier Delhi High Court order protecting his personality rights. While the film’s release date currently remains unknown, a trailer was launched earlier. The poster was released by the filmmakers on May 29, while the trailer was released on June 12.
Subsequently, the actor sought an ad-interim injunction restraining the film's producer Amit Jani, Jani FireFox Films, director Bharat Shrinate, Akshay Pandey and other persons associated with the project from producing, promoting, distributing, exhibiting, streaming or releasing the film pending adjudication of the suit.
Actor Namdev Reacts To Trailer
Last week, the controversy took a fresh turn when veteran actor Govind Namdev alleged that the makers of ‘Kala Hiran’ misled him about the project. He claimed the narrated script differed completely from what was filmed.
In an interview with Amar Ujala, Namdev said that he was initially told he was working on a film titled Sambhal, later renamed Kala Hiran. He also claimed he was assured it would focus only on courtroom proceedings related to Khan’s blackbuck case. Namdev further stressed that he would never be part of any project targeting the actor, referring to the trailer launch.
