What is the story about?
Shrek’s chatty and extremely needy partner Donkey is all set to take the spotlight in the upcoming spinoff of the beloved animated series. 26 years after the release of the first Shrek film, DreamWorks Animation confirmed a Donkey spin-off to hit screens in summer 2028.
According to reports, the spinoff will feature Eddie Murphy, marking his return to voice his signature character in the film. Directed by Charlie Bean, famous for The Lego Ninjago Movie and the live-action Lady and the Tramp, Donkey is an origin story where the audience will finally learn how a donkey became Donkey. The film is co-directed by Matt Flynn and produced by Rebecca Hutley. Flynn has previously worked on The Wild Robot and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, while Hutley is associated with major films like Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Bad Guys.
Previously, during an interview with ScreenRant, Eddie Murphy shared, 'Donkey's going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie; Donkey’s going to have his own movie, his own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkey.' They’ve written this funny story.”
The highly anticipated spin-off is expected to release on June 30, 2028. A year before Donkey makes its way to the screens, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation are all set to release Shrek 5 in summer 2027. Directed by franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, Shrek 5 features Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as they return to the fictional land of Far, Far Away in their signature roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. As per reports, Zendaya will also join the cast of the fifth instalment of the franchise.
The original Shrek movie, which was released in 2000, became an instant hit and received the first-ever Oscar for an animated feature. The film was followed by three sequels, titled Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, in 2004, 2007, and 2010, respectively. The franchise also released two Puss in Boots spinoffs that gained wide acclaim worldwide. As the beloved character of the franchise is finally getting a spin-off, fans are eager to watch what Donkey has in store for them.
