What is the story about?
For the last few years, Emraan Hashmi has been trying to reinvent himself. He played the antagonist in Tiger 3, made an extended cameo in Selfiee, and even took on military drama with Ground Zero. While these films showed that he was willing to experiment, they also moved him away from the space where audiences first connected with him.
Now, Awarapan 2 seems to be bringing him back to familiar ground.
The teaser of the sequel, released on June 29, has already sparked nostalgia among fans by bringing back Shivam, one of Emraan's most-loved characters. Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, the film also stars Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi.
Back to the Emraan Hashmi fans missed
There was a time when Emraan Hashmi had almost carved out his own genre in Bollywood. Films like Awarapan, Jannat, Gangster, Murder, Zeher, Kalyug, Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Raaz: The Mystery Continues and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai featured emotionally damaged characters, romance, action, memorable music and plenty of intensity.
Those films made him a star.
In contrast, his recent filmography has looked very different. Selfiee was largely an Akshay Kumar-led comedy-drama where Emraan played a supporting role. In Tiger 3, he was appreciated as the villain, but the spotlight naturally remained on Salman Khan and the larger YRF Spy Universe. Even
Ground Zero presented him in a restrained, patriotic role that was far removed from the emotionally vulnerable characters audiences associated him with.
Awarapan 2 changes that equation. Here, Emraan is once again the face of the story.
A strong line-up ahead
Interestingly, Awarapan 2 is not the only project that signals a shift.
According to multiple reports, Emraan is also set to headline Rooh, a musical horror film directed by Mayank Sharma. While details are still under wraps, the project combines horror with music – another space that feels much closer to the kind of cinema Emraan built his popularity on during the 2000s.
Both Awarapan 2 and Rooh seem to lean towards genres that have always worked well for him – romance, mystery, emotion, music and darker storytelling.
Nostalgia alone won't be enough
Of course, returning to a cult film also comes with pressure. The original Awarapan may not have been a box office success in 2007, but over the years, it found a loyal audience through television. Its songs, emotional story and Emraan's performance have helped it achieve cult status. That is exactly why the sequel carries huge expectations.
Emraan Hashmi himself has previously explained that the team waited several years before moving ahead because they wanted the right script instead of making a sequel just for nostalgia.
“This film has been planned for the past seven years. We just happened to stumble upon a script. We were holding off on a sequel, but when we read a script that was taking Shivam’s journey ahead, we got to it. It’s not cashing in," he told The Indian Express in January this year.
Could this be a career reset?
It is too early to predict whether Awarapan 2 will become a box office success. But one thing is clear: the film represents something bigger than just another sequel.
If Awarapan 2 delivers on its story, music and emotions, it may not just revive one of Bollywood's most-loved cult films. It could also open an exciting new phase in Emraan Hashmi's career – one that feels surprisingly close to where it all began.
