Veteran British actor Michael Byrne, known for his roles in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Indiana Jonesand the Last Crusade and Braveheart, has died at the age of 82. Reports suggest Byrne died on June 20. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Byrne built a reputation as one of Britain's most dependable character actors, with more than 170 film and television credits alongside an extensive stage career.
For many audiences, Byrne was best known for portraying the elderly Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010). The role was later played by Johnny Depp and Mads Mikkelsen in the

Born on November 7, 1943, in Hampstead, London, Byrne began his acting career in the early 1960s. He trained and performed with Laurence Olivier's National Theatre Company, appearing alongside acclaimed actors including Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in productions such as
Romeo and Juliet, The Cherry Orchard, Much Ado About Nothing and The Seagull.
His stage work also included Butley in London's West End, directed by Harold Pinter, and Death and the Maiden at the Royal Court Theatre.
On television, Byrne appeared in series including No Hiding Place, New Scotland Yard, Thriller, Coronation Street and Casualty. Between 2008 and 2010, he played Ted Page in the long-running ITV soap Coronation Street.
Byrne made his feature film debut with an uncredited role in The Scarlet Blade (released as The Crimson Blade in some markets) in 1963 and remained active across film, television and theatre well into the 2010s.
He is survived by his former wife, actress Carole Nimmons, who reportedly cared for him towards the end of his life, their daughters Tara and Bryony, and grandchildren Tom, Chloe and Jasmine.
