What is the story about?
The makers of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan have officially announced that the film will release in theatres on July 23, ending weeks of speculation over its release date.
The official announcement follows days of speculation over the film's release date. Vijay's private secretary, Jagadish Palani, had earlier shared a motion graphic on Instagram that read, "Alright the hype is real, can't wait for 23rd," while online ticketing platform District also began promoting the film by enabling ticket reminders ahead of bookings.
The film was originally scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, but its release was postponed.
Adding to the excitement, online ticketing platform District has also begun promoting the film on social media, announcing that ticket reminders are now live and that bookings will open shortly.
The film's UK distributor, Ahimsa Entertainment, has officially confirmed that Jana Nayaganwill be released in British cinemas on July 24. The distributor said audiences in the UK will get to watch the uncut version of the film, which has received a 15 rating.
In a post on X, it said, "THE HONOURABLE CHIEF MINISTER OF TAMIL NADU. C JOSEPH VIJAY. #JanaNayagan in UK cinemas July 24 - uncut, 15-rated. All the action, all the mass, all the Thalapathy craze, exactly as it was meant to be seen. One last time."
CBFC clears film with modifications
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted Jana Nayagan an A certificate. According to the certification details, the film has a runtime of 183 minutes and 11 seconds (just over three hours) and received certification on July 9.
Before clearing the film, the CBFC directed the makers to implement 12 modifications, including changes to certain dialogues and visuals. The board also ordered brief deletions and replacements totalling around 30 seconds, while the overall runtime remained unchanged.
Vijay's final film before full-time politics
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is expected to be Vijay's final film as an actor before he shifts his full focus to politics. Produced by KVN Productions, the film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
Vijay's film likely to clash with son Jason Sanjay's SigmaJana Nayagan could arrive in theatres around the same time as Sigma, the directorial debut of Vijay's son, Jason. Backed by Lyca Productions, Sigma features Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles.
The film is currently slated for a July 31 release. However, media reports suggest its release may be pushed to August to avoid a clash with Jana Nayagan. However, there is no official confirmation from his film’s team either.
