What is the story about?
Advance booking for director Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming mythological epic Ramayana: Part One has crossed the ₹10-crore mark in India within five days of ticket windows opening, trade tracking data showed on Sunday.
The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash, opened nationwide pre-sales on October 20, coinciding with Dussehra, about two weeks ahead of its scheduled worldwide theatrical release on November 5.
Industry tracker Sacnilk reported total domestic pre-sales at ₹11.11 crore gross (₹8.89 crore excluding blocked seats), with nearly two lakh tickets booked across circuits. Separately, box office platform Films Discourse pegged early three-day advance receipts at ₹11.38 crore across 12,604 tracked shows in 151 cities, rising to ₹21.92 crore when factoring in blocked cinema inventory.
High-end premium formats have emerged as the primary revenue engine in early booking trends. According to trade figures, IMAX screenings account for just 3.8% of the total show count across India, yet they have contributed approximately 25% of the advance booking earnings so far.
IMAX screenings have recorded over 23,000 ticket sales across roughly 140 shows—averaging about 170 tickets per screening—compared to standard regular shows averaging 35 tickets per screening. The surge in premium demand comes despite substantially higher pricing, with average IMAX tickets ranging from ₹1,095 to ₹1,500, compared with ₹380 for standard 2D and 3D screenings.
Language trends indicate heavy initial demand for the Hindi version, which accounts for approximately 87% of total advance receipts, generating over ₹9.15 crore to ₹10.10 crore. The Kannada version is also gaining traction, crossing the ₹1-crore threshold across about 100 screens, while Telugu screenings have seen an initial limited release across select locations ahead of a wider rollout this week.
Geographically, Maharashtra leads domestic ticket pre-sales with collections between ₹2.44 crore and ₹2.98 crore, followed by the Delhi-NCR circuit with over ₹2 crore and Karnataka with upwards of ₹1.47 crore. Major national multiplex chains—PVR Inox and Cinepolis—account for roughly 77% of tracked domestic pre-sales.
In overseas markets, advance bookings have crossed $1.1 million, led by North America, which has contributed over $475,000 across premiere and opening-day reservations.
Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios alongside DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana is conceived as a two-part epic. The first instalment features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, with an original score by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The film will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on November 5, with the second instalment scheduled for Diwali 2027.
