Incident Unfolds
On the morning of April 15th, a critical moment at the Mumbai Metro construction zone in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) took a turn for the worse. During an overnight
operation on Metro Line 2B, a massive 400-ton mobile crane experienced a catastrophic failure while attempting to lift a pre-cast beam. The crane toppled near the Asian Heart Hospital junction, causing the beam to collapse and bringing the work to an immediate halt. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) indicated that a mechanical issue led to a load shift during the complex procedure, which involved two cranes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath, but the incident significantly impacted traffic flow in this bustling commercial hub.
Response and Investigation
Following the unsettling collapse, authorities moved swiftly to manage the situation and ensure public safety. Traffic in the affected areas of BKC, a prime business district, was rerouted to mitigate the disruption. To clear the site and assess the damage, a more powerful 600-ton crane was deployed. In light of the incident, a formal technical inquiry has been initiated by officials. This investigation aims to pinpoint the exact cause of the failure and to scrutinize the safety measures implemented during such high-stakes construction activities. The event has amplified existing concerns regarding infrastructure risks and the rigorous safety protocols required for mega-projects in densely populated urban environments like Mumbai.
