Airport Food Expansion
Passengers at Kannur International Airport can now savor the well-loved, cost-effective dishes meticulously prepared by Kannur Central Jail. Prison authorities
have broadened their reach by establishing a new mobile food counter directly at the airport, bringing their renowned culinary offerings to a wider audience. These products, celebrated for their quality and economical pricing, have already garnered significant popularity throughout Kerala. The airport counter operates daily between 12 pm and 1:30 pm, featuring a diverse menu that includes chapati, chicken biryani, chilli chicken, chicken kebab, chicken curry, egg curry, vegetable curry, laddus, and banana chips. Following airport operations, the mobile counter relocates to the Mattannur bus stand, continuing its service until 6 pm, ensuring continued access for the local community.
Unbeatable Value Pricing
A significant draw for these jail-made products is their remarkably competitive pricing structure. For instance, a serving of ten chapatis is available for a mere Rs 30. The popular chicken biryani comes in at an astonishing Rs 70, while the vegetable biryani is priced at just Rs 45. Even individual curry dishes are incredibly affordable, with chicken curry costing Rs 30 and egg curry a mere Rs 20. This pricing strategy makes nutritious and satisfying meals accessible to a broad spectrum of the population. The jail kitchen demonstrates a commitment to providing value without compromising on taste or quality, making it a standout option for budget-conscious consumers.
Beyond Kerala Appeal
The appeal of Kannur Central Jail's food extends beyond state borders, with many international travelers making purchases before their flights abroad. Particularly, the jail-made laddus and banana chips are proving to be popular takeaways, helping to elevate the products' recognition on a global stage. This international interest signifies the broad appeal and quality of the food, transcending regional preferences. The jail authorities are actively leveraging this demand to introduce their products to a wider market, showcasing the capabilities of their culinary operations and the quality of ingredients used. This expansion not only benefits the consumers but also contributes to the visibility of the prison's rehabilitation initiatives.
Sweets and Snacks Demand
Beyond the main courses, the snack and sweet offerings from Kannur Central Jail are also experiencing robust demand. The traditional jail-made laddu is a particularly sought-after item, sold at Rs 200 per kilogram, offering a sweet indulgence at an accessible price point. Similarly, banana chips are available for Rs 165 for a 500-gram pack, providing a crispy and flavorful snack. Even pre-packaged chocolates are offered at Rs 60 for 100 grams. Savory snacks like chicken kebab and chilli chicken are also popular choices, priced attractively at Rs 80. This diverse range of products caters to various tastes and preferences, ensuring there's something for everyone.
Rehabilitation and Employment
Superintendent K. Venu highlighted the consistent public acceptance and positive reception that the food items prepared at the central jail have consistently received over the years. The prison department anticipates that this expanded sales network will significantly bolster their rehabilitation programs for inmates. By creating additional work opportunities and fostering skill-based activities within the jail system, these initiatives aim to equip inmates with valuable experience and training. This not only contributes to their reintegration into society but also empowers them through meaningful employment during their incarceration, fostering a sense of purpose and skill development.
