The Samosa Enigma
The beloved samosa, a staple across northern and eastern India and increasingly popular nationwide, has captivated taste buds with its crispy exterior
and savory potato filling. Often deep-fried and served with chutneys, it's a quintessential street food experience. However, its widespread appeal has also led to innovative fusion versions and a global presence. Despite its ubiquity, some, like actor Akshay Kumar, choose to forgo it entirely. Kumar recently shared during a game show appearance that he has consciously avoided samosas for the past 15 years, not for diet or weight management, but due to the physical discomfort, specifically acidity, it causes his body. He humorously pointed out the irony of filming a song titled 'Jab Tak Rahega Samose Mein Aaloo' while having personally abstained from the very snack.
Health Concerns Unveiled
The regular consumption of fried and processed foods like samosas can contribute to significant cardiovascular issues over time, according to medical experts. Dr. Parin Sangoi, a consultant interventional cardiologist, explains that each serving of such items can lead to an accumulation of cholesterol, inflammation, and oxidative stress within the arterial system. This ongoing process can result in the formation of plaque, causing arteries to narrow and reducing blood flow to the heart. What appears to be an innocent indulgence today might lay the groundwork for serious heart disease in the future. Foods high in trans fats, carbohydrates, and salt can stiffen blood vessel walls, elevate blood pressure, and disrupt the balance between 'bad' (LDL) and 'good' (HDL) cholesterol.
Healthier Samosa Swaps
While the traditional samosa may pose health challenges, opportunities exist to enjoy similar flavors with healthier preparation methods. Vedika Premani, a clinical dietician, suggests incorporating ingredients like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom into the filling. These 'functional foods' can not only enhance the taste but also offer health advantages, such as boosting immunity and possessing anti-inflammatory properties. Making samosas with healthier cooking oils and alternative techniques like baking or air-frying can significantly reduce their unhealthiness. For those wishing to steer clear of samosas altogether, Premani recommends a variety of nutritious snack options. These include baked ragi chips paired with hummus, the traditional steamed dish dhokla, roasted makhana (fox nuts), chana chaat (chickpea salad), and khakhra served with a hung curd dip. Air-fried vegetables also present a lighter alternative to deep-fried pakoras.
