Viral Prayer and Campaign Kick-off
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections fast approaching, a video capturing actor and politician C. Joseph Vijay, widely known as Vijay, engaged in prayer
at St. Anthony's Church in Tiruchirapalli has swiftly circulated online, capturing widespread attention. This moment of devotion occurred just prior to Vijay commencing his electoral campaign activities within the constituency. His campaign strategically targets two significant electoral districts: Trichy East and Perambur. These areas are notable for their diverse electorate, which includes a substantial population of Christian voters. Trichy East, in particular, is being closely monitored due to its working-class demographic and its considerable share of minority votes, positioning it as a pivotal battleground in the upcoming elections. Concurrently, the Perambur constituency is considered crucial for expanding his party's influence within Chennai's urban political sphere. Vijay's political party, TVK, has centered its campaign on key issues such as voter dissatisfaction with the incumbent government and accusations of corruption leveled against the ruling DMK, aiming to establish TVK as a viable alternative political force in the state.
Opposition's Critical Response
The widespread circulation of Vijay's church visit has not gone unnoticed by the opposition, eliciting strong reactions. P. Wilson, a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament for the DMK, publicly dismissed the actor's gesture as a mere 'photo-op.' Wilson contended that such last-minute attempts at outreach would be ineffective in earning the trust of the Christian community. He further raised questions about Vijay's historical silence on matters pertinent to the Christian populace, pointedly asking, "Where were you when they burnt churches, arrested priests and nuns on fake charges, disturbed Christmas and Easter masses with hooligans?" Wilson also brought forth concerns regarding policy decisions, specifically mentioning the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act Amendment Act, which he described as 'draconian.' He questioned Vijay's inaction and what prevented him from speaking out when the BJP introduced this legislation, which he argued aimed at impacting Christian missionaries and their properties.
