New Health Initiative
In a landmark move designed to bolster worker welfare, the Indian government has launched a nationwide program offering free annual health check-ups. This
crucial benefit is specifically targeted at individuals aged 40 and above, forming a cornerstone of the recently enacted Labour Codes. The initiative, which commenced on May 7, 2026, was officially inaugurated at the ESIC Medical College & Hospital in Basaidarapur, New Delhi. Its rollout signifies a broad commitment to enhancing the health and social security provisions for the country's labor force, aligning with the 'Shramev Jayate' vision that champions the dignity of work. This program is a direct result of extensive reforms that consolidated 29 central labor laws into four overarching codes, streamlining regulations and expanding social security coverage.
Eligibility and Scope
The primary beneficiaries of this new health initiative are workers who have reached the age of 40. For those already enrolled under the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Scheme, these essential health screenings will be conducted through the extensive network of ESIC hospitals. The focus is firmly on early detection of potential health issues, promoting preventive care strategies, and ensuring continuous health monitoring to maintain a healthy workforce. Furthermore, the mandate extends to workers engaged in operations deemed hazardous, such as those involving the handling of chemicals, toxic substances, or heavy machinery, irrespective of their age. This ensures a comprehensive approach to occupational health and safety across various sectors.
Broader Social Security
This health check-up program is an integral part of the wider reforms introduced by the four new Labour Codes, which aim to modernize labor laws and enhance social security. Specifically, the Code on Social Security, 2020, plays a pivotal role by extending benefits to a broader spectrum of workers, including those in the unorganized sector, gig economy, and platform work. It also establishes a dedicated Social Security Fund and significantly broadens the range of benefits available through ESIC. The systematic maintenance of health records and periodic monitoring are envisioned as critical components to safeguard the long-term well-being of all employees, fostering a healthier and more secure working environment across the nation.
