Bus Fare Hikes
The journey to Kerala for Vishu celebrations has become noticeably pricier, particularly for those relying on KSRTC buses. Passengers aiming to travel
from Chennai to Ernakulam are encountering steep increases, especially on the AC sleeper services. For instance, a popular 8:30 PM service on April 10th, typically costing around ₹1,640, has jumped to ₹2,456. This surge is largely due to dynamic pricing, a system where fares fluctuate based on demand. With Vishu being a high-demand travel period, these rates have climbed considerably, making bus travel a less economical choice for many. The pricing also varies; while fares remain above ₹2,000 on subsequent dates like April 11th and 12th, they can dip back to ₹1,640 on April 13th and 14th when travel demand is lower. This variability has led to traveler concerns, especially given the scarcity of alternative transport during the festive season.
Route & Train Options
The specific KSRTC AC sleeper service from Kilambakkam to Ernakulam operates with a schedule that includes stops at various towns such as Guduvancherry, Singaperumal Koil, Thindivanam, Villupuram, Salem, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, Chalakkudy, and Angamali, arriving in Ernakulam the following morning. For those seeking a less expensive option, a non-AC super deluxe bus is available departing at 6:30 PM for ₹1,261. However, many passengers favor the later sleeper service for its more convenient overnight travel arrangement. Adding to the travel woes, train tickets for this route are largely unavailable due to the immense seasonal demand. This lack of train availability significantly increases the reliance on bus and flight services, further exacerbating the fare increases on these modes of transport.
Airfare Surge
Air travel has also seen a dramatic escalation in costs during the Vishu period, making it a significantly more expensive option. For flights originating from Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram, travelers can expect prices to range between ₹6,700 and ₹7,400 between April 10th and 13th. Similarly, tickets to Kochi are priced between ₹5,100 and ₹6,900. The cost to fly to Kozhikode can reach as high as ₹9,396 on peak travel days. The most substantial fare hikes are observed on routes heading to Kannur, where ticket prices can exceed ₹10,000, reaching up to ₹12,000 for travel on April 10th. This widespread increase in airfares, coupled with the rising bus and unavailable train tickets, leaves travelers with very limited and costly alternatives for reaching their destinations in Kerala for the festival.
