Garga Chatterjee, the prominent founder and general secretary of Bangla Pokkho, found himself in the custody of Kolkata Police on a Tuesday. The basis
for this detention, as reported, centers on accusations of disseminating misleading statements pertaining to the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) during the vote tabulation phase of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. This development transpired shortly after the election results were declared on May 4th, a period during which Chatterjee had publicly voiced concerns, claiming that EVMs had been interchanged during the counting process. The arrest was reportedly a direct consequence of a First Information Report (FIR) lodged by Smita Pandey, who serves as the District Election Officer (DEO) for North Kolkata. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had previously flagged Chatterjee for circulating what they deemed to be untruthful and deceptive content on social media, specifically concerning the integrity and procedures of the vote counting. Following these complaints, law enforcement officers apprehended him from the Deshapriya Park vicinity on Tuesday morning, initiating a significant controversy around the electoral process.
Questions of Integrity
The controversy ignited when Garga Chatterjee, a figure well-known in Bengal's political and socio-cultural spheres, openly questioned the fairness of the counting procedures and alleged a series of irregularities specifically involving the EVMs. These claims, however, were swiftly refuted by election authorities, who dismissed them outright as unfounded and baseless. In response to the alleged spread of misinformation, which could potentially lead to public confusion regarding the electoral system, legal proceedings were initiated against him. Beyond the allegations of misinformation, law enforcement agencies are also reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding Chatterjee's security detail. Sources indicate that he had access to either a government-provided Personal Security Officer (PSO) or private security personnel. Officials are now scrutinizing the mechanisms and processes through which this security arrangement was facilitated, adding another layer to the ongoing investigation into Chatterjee's actions and associations during the election period.
Bangla Pokkho's Stance
Garga Chatterjee is widely recognized as the architect behind Bangla Pokkho, an organization he established on January 7, 2018. This group positions itself as a dedicated platform committed to safeguarding the Bengali language, preserving its rich culture, and advocating for the rights of local residents within West Bengal. The organization has consistently championed a strong stance on local empowerment, demanding a 100 percent job reservation in state government positions for individuals residing in Bengal and a 90 percent reservation for locals in other sectors that operate within the state's boundaries. Academically, Chatterjee's background includes completing his MBBS from Kolkata Medical College, followed by pursuing a PhD from the prestigious Harvard University. Over time, he has often been perceived as having political leanings towards the Trinamool Congress, particularly during past Assembly elections where his public statements were seen as lending indirect support to the then-governing party.
Past Legal Troubles
This recent arrest is not the first instance of Garga Chatterjee encountering legal difficulties. In 2022, he was previously taken into custody in connection with alleged derogatory remarks made against the Ahom community in Assam back in 2020. While he was eventually granted conditional bail in that particular case, it highlights a pattern of him facing legal scrutiny for his public statements.
