Voter Roll Dynamics
The political landscape in Kolkata is experiencing a significant shift with the finalization of voter rolls, revealing a substantial decrease of 6,06,563
voters across Kolkata North and Kolkata South districts. This figure closely mirrors the victory margin the Trinamool Congress (TMC) held over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021 Assembly elections across these two districts, which collectively account for all 14 Assembly seats within the city. Kolkata South alone has seen a reduction of 2,47,882 voters, a decline of nearly 27%, while Kolkata North experienced a larger deletion of 3,58,681 names, representing a drop of approximately 24%. This substantial attrition in the electorate is setting the stage for a potentially more competitive electoral battleground in what has long been a formidable bastion for the TMC.
Historical Electoral Trends
Examining past election results provides crucial context for understanding the current electoral dynamics in Kolkata. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP saw a significant surge in West Bengal, the TMC maintained comfortable leads in both Kolkata districts, securing Kolkata South by a margin of 1.55 lakh votes and Kolkata North by 1.27 lakh votes. However, by the 2024 general elections, although the BJP retained its vote share, the TMC's victory margin in Kolkata South actually widened to 1.87 lakh votes, while the margin in Kolkata North, though reduced, remained a strong 92,560 votes. The 2021 Assembly elections further underscore the TMC's dominance, with the party winning all 14 seats in Kolkata. The margin in Kolkata South was 3.46 lakh votes, and in Kolkata North, it was 2.62 lakh votes, with seven of these winning MLAs subsequently becoming ministers in the state government.
Implications for TMC
The substantial reduction in voters has understandably caused some apprehension within the Trinamool Congress, despite the uncertainty over which party will be most affected. A senior TMC leader acknowledged concerns, noting that even Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's constituency, Bhabanipur, has seen over 50,000 voter deletions. This is particularly significant given that her victory margin in a 2021 bypoll was less than 50,000. Furthermore, the leader pointed to the 2024 Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, where the BJP demonstrated strength by leading in over 40 of the 144 wards, including more than five wards in Bhabanipur. While acknowledging that the fight in Kolkata will not be easy and margins may decrease, the party remains optimistic about retaining all seats through extensive household outreach and dedicated worker efforts.
BJP's Optimism
Conversely, the Bharatiya Janata Party views the current electoral situation with considerable optimism. A senior BJP leader stated that the party anticipates positive outcomes in Kolkata, not solely due to the significant voter deletions but also because they believe the TMC's ability to engage in malpractices like false polling and rigging will be curtailed. This sentiment suggests a belief within the BJP that the reduced electorate and a potentially more level playing field will favor their prospects. The party's focus appears to be on leveraging the changing voter demography and what they perceive as an increased likelihood of a fairer electoral process to challenge the TMC's long-standing dominance in the city.
