Heatwave Grips South Bengal
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant heatwave alert across several districts in South Bengal, coinciding with the festive
occasion of Pohela Boisakh. Specifically, the districts of Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, West Medinipur, and East Medinipur are anticipated to endure these harsh conditions from April 13th to April 15th. This alert signals a stark contrast to the recent, brief period of relief provided by Kalbaishakhi thunderstorms, with temperatures now climbing rapidly and reintroducing intensely hot summer weather. Experts are warning that the combination of elevated temperatures and high humidity levels, particularly towards the end of the Bengali month of Chaitra, will dramatically increase discomfort for residents.
Kolkata's Weather Outlook
Kolkata and its neighboring areas are forecast to experience a mixed bag of weather for Pohela Boisakh. While a heatwave looms over South Bengal, the city itself is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on April 14th and 15th. Despite this potential for rain, the maximum temperature in Kolkata is projected to hover around a stifling 37 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature around 28 degrees Celsius. The Alipore Meteorological Department indicates that temperatures in the city and surrounding districts could rise 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal. This surge is attributed to dry westerly winds, which are diminishing atmospheric moisture and intensifying the daytime heat, making the conditions feel even more oppressive due to high humidity.
Potential for Stormy Relief
While the overarching weather pattern for Pohela Boisakh points towards intense heat and humidity in South Bengal, there's a possibility of localized, albeit brief, relief in certain areas. Between April 14th and April 16th, scattered light showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in several western districts, including Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, and Jhargram, as well as West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Murshidabad. These events might include gusty winds and lightning, characteristic of Kalbaishakhi storms. However, meteorologists caution that these rainfall occurrences are expected to be short-lived and isolated, unlikely to provide substantial or lasting reduction in temperatures or significant respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions. This means celebrations might still be predominantly affected by the heat.
Advisory and Precautions
In light of the impending heatwave conditions, the IMD is strongly advising the public to take comprehensive precautions to safeguard their health. Key recommendations include avoiding direct exposure to the sun during the peak hours of the day, opting for lightweight, light-colored cotton clothing to help the body stay cool, and ensuring adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Residents are urged to remain indoors whenever possible during the hottest parts of the afternoon. The festival of Pohela Boisakh, a cornerstone of Bengali culture symbolizing new beginnings, is celebrated with immense fervor. The current weather forecast, however, poses a challenge to outdoor festivities and traditional gatherings, prompting a need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to ensure safety and comfort during the celebrations.
