Tourism's New Thrust
The Union Budget 2026 is driving a major transformation in India's tourism sector, recognizing its potential for economic growth and cultural promotion.
The Economic Survey highlighted the need for a 'tourist-centric' approach. This involves enhancing various aspects of the travel experience, including ease of travel, accommodation, local transportation, cleanliness, and safety. Furthermore, the survey noted different state-level strategies, such as Gujarat's event-based tourism, Kerala's destination management, and Sikkim's sustainable model. Experiential Cultural Sites

The Finance Minister has announced the development of 15 archaeological sites, transforming them into experiential cultural destinations. These sites will provide immersive experiences, including curated walkways and storytelling to bring history to life. An initiative is also proposed for the North East, showcasing Theravada and Mahayana/Vajrayana Buddhist traditions across six states. This scheme aims to preserve temples and monasteries, develop pilgrimage interpretation centers, and improve connectivity and amenities for pilgrims. These steps are part of a broader vision to celebrate India's rich cultural heritage.
Boosting Infrastructure Capacity
The budget also highlights infrastructure capacity, which is essential to support the expansion of tourism. An integrated East Coast Industrial Corridor will be created, leading to the development of five tourism destinations in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. This is aimed at improving connectivity and attracting visitors. A well-connected node will be established at Durgapur, and the allocation of 4,000 e-buses is expected to make travel more accessible and sustainable. Infrastructure development is essential for managing the increased influx of tourists and ensuring their comfort.
Medical Tourism Push
Medical tourism is also gaining importance. The budget recognizes the potential of this niche tourism segment to contribute significantly to the economy. The focus on medical tourism aims to attract patients from around the world to India, offering high-quality healthcare and wellness services.
