Extreme Weather Advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put several districts in South Bengal on high alert, including major urban centers like Kolkata and Howrah,
alongside Nadia and North 24 Parganas. This severe weather warning signifies the imminent arrival of intense thunderstorms, accompanied by substantial rainfall, frequent lightning, and formidable winds. These gusts are predicted to reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, posing a significant risk. The weather system is developing favorably for Kalbaishakhi, a well-known seasonal phenomenon in the region characterized by its sudden and often violent storms. This alert urges residents to be prepared for potentially disruptive conditions and to prioritize safety.
Kalbaishakhi's Fierce Return
South Bengal is currently experiencing conditions ripe for intense Kalbaishakhi activity, a powerful seasonal storm known for its abrupt onset and ferocity. The IMD has confirmed that widespread rain, punctuated by thunder and lightning, is anticipated across districts such as Nadia, Murshidabad, and North 24 Parganas. Kolkata, Howrah, and large swathes of South 24 Parganas are also expected to bear the brunt of this severe weather, particularly as the evening progresses. The wind speeds are a major concern, with projections of up to 70–80 kmph in specific locations, which could lead to damage to infrastructure and significant disruptions to daily routines. Earlier alerts had already warned of thunderstorms and thundersqualls in South Bengal, with winds ranging from 50–70 kmph, hinting at the escalating intensity.
Rainfall and Contributing Factors
Beyond the strong winds and thunder, forecasts also indicate substantial rainfall in certain pockets. Districts like North 24 Parganas and Hooghly could see between 7 to 11 centimeters of rain. This volatile weather pattern is being fueled by a confluence of atmospheric factors. Moisture drawn from the Bay of Bengal is meeting with a trough and a cyclonic circulation present over eastern India. This combination has been responsible for the recurring thunderstorm activity observed over Kolkata and its surrounding areas in recent days, even causing flight delays and disruptions due to the high winds and lightning. The critical period for these intense weather events is expected to last for the next two to three hours.
Safety Precautions Advised
Given the severity of the incoming weather, meteorologists are emphasizing the potential for intense lightning strikes, the risk of trees being uprooted, and damage to temporary structures. Residents in the affected districts have been strongly advised to seek safe indoor shelter and to avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during the storm. While these severe storms might offer a temporary respite from the prevailing heat and humidity, the abrupt and potent nature of these systems necessitates caution. Authorities are urging everyone to remain vigilant and adhere to all safety advisories until the weather conditions improve and the red alert is downgraded.
