Themed Dining Gone Wrong
The Kankal Horror Restaurant in Varanasi, known for its immersive 'spooky' ambiance with staff in ghost costumes, found itself at the center of controversy.
What was intended as a thrilling dining experience took a disturbing turn when a video surfaced, showcasing a young boy in palpable distress. The clip, originally shared by the restaurant, shows the child becoming increasingly anxious as a costumed performer approaches his table. His fear escalates to tears, pleading "Please papa nahi" (Please dad, no), evidently overwhelmed by the encounter. The disturbing footage, which garnered nearly 80 million views, has drawn sharp criticism from online audiences who question the appropriateness of such entertainment, particularly when it involves young children and appears to cause genuine emotional trauma. The incident raises crucial questions about the boundaries of entertainment and the ethical considerations of creating fear-based experiences for diners, especially vulnerable ones.
Public Outrage Erupts
The widespread sharing of the distressing video led to an immediate and significant public outcry across social media platforms. Many viewers expressed deep concern over the potential long-term psychological impact on the child, with comments highlighting how such traumatic experiences can leave lasting scars. Users questioned the judgment of both the establishment and the parents, with one commenter stating, "Such traumas in childhood can’t be erased easily. … And the impact these experiences on their mental health is not at all good." The general sentiment leaned towards a strong disapproval of the restaurant's concept, with many arguing that it was inappropriate and potentially harmful to expose children to such frightening scenarios. Remarks like, "What nonsense ambience is this .. and also traumatising the children .. what parents you are," and "Don’t understand how this can be funny . That bachcha is crying," underscored the public's dismay at the situation, deeming it neither enjoyable for children nor for adults seeking lighthearted entertainment.
Restaurant's Defense
In response to the mounting criticism, the Kankal Horror Restaurant issued a statement in the comments section of the viral video, attempting to address the concerns raised. The establishment acknowledged the worries, particularly regarding children, but maintained that their concept is a 'horror-themed experience' that patrons engage with voluntarily, asserting that no one is coerced into participation. They emphasized that they exercise extra caution with children and strive to ensure no one feels uncomfortable during their visit. The restaurant suggested that judging the entire experience based on a short, viral clip would be inaccurate and that safety and comfort are paramount in reality. This defense, however, did little to assuage the public's feelings, as many felt the explanation did not adequately address the visible distress of the child in the video and the ethical implications of such an act.
