The Long Wait
For eight arduous years, Harmanjot Kaur dedicated herself to reaching a specific professional summit: the position of Senior Manager. This prolonged period
of sustained effort, marked by relentless striving and numerous challenges, culminated in what she believed was the ultimate validation of her hard work. The coveted title, coupled with a substantial salary package of ₹28 LPA, brought external accolades and parental pride. At this juncture, it felt unequivocally like she had arrived at her professional destination, a place she had meticulously planned and strived for, solidifying the perception of a triumphant career ascent.
The Demanding Reality
The euphoria of the promotion quickly gave way to a starkly different reality within the first six months. The role demanded an unsustainable pace, with workdays stretching to 14-16 hours, becoming the new standard rather than an anomaly. This relentless schedule led to a severe erosion of personal time, causing Harmanjot to miss critical moments like her daughter's inaugural school function – an irreplaceable memory lost forever. What began as mere work-related stress rapidly escalated into debilitating panic attacks preceding important meetings. Her physical health began to decline alarmingly, manifesting as fluctuating blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, and pervasive anxiety. Concurrently, the immense pressure from her demanding job started to infiltrate her marital life, introducing an additional layer of strain and complexity outside of her professional sphere.
The Breaking Point
The cumulative pressure from work and personal life eventually reached a critical juncture, leading to an overwhelming collapse. This breaking point manifested visibly when Harmanjot experienced a breakdown while in the office washroom, a profoundly distressing incident that served as a stark realization of the severity of her situation. Tragically, within that same week, she made the difficult decision to resign from her position. This significant career move was made without the security of another job offer or a concrete plan for her future, underscoring the depth of her distress and her imperative need for immediate change.
A New Beginning
Merely two months after relinquishing her high-pressure role, Harmanjot's life has undergone a profound transformation. She has established a small enterprise focused on providing AI services to businesses in Punjab, operating from the comfort of her home. While her current income is considerably lower than her previous package, the reduction in stress has been immeasurable. She now describes her daily existence as one where restful sleep has returned, family interactions feel genuinely present, and the daily grind no longer resembles a desperate struggle for survival, but rather a sustainable and peaceful way of living.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on her journey, Harmanjot recognizes how the very promotion she had pursued so ardently had gradually morphed into a situation she found utterly unsustainable. What initially represented a pinnacle of achievement ultimately felt like a form of professional confinement. Online discussions surrounding her experience often labelled it a classic 'promotion trap,' where the allure of a higher title and increased remuneration can significantly compromise one's health, relationships, and overall sense of peace. Many resonated with the sentiment that true prosperity lies not in a high CTC, but in the autonomy over one's time and the presence of mental tranquility.
