Unauthorised Roadshow Allegations
A case has been formally registered against Vijay, the prominent leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, in Chennai. The allegations stem from
his participation in an unapproved roadshow held in the T Nagar area of the city. According to election officials, this action was prompted by a formal complaint filed by a member of the Election Flying Squad. The crux of the complaint is that Vijay conducted a roadshow, which is a large-scale public event, despite having received permission for a different, more regulated form of campaign activity. This divergence from the officially sanctioned campaign format is being cited as a direct violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), a set of guidelines that all political parties and candidates must rigorously follow during election periods, especially with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on the horizon.
Multiple Police Cases Registered
In connection with the alleged election norm violation, the police have initiated legal proceedings by filing three separate cases against Vijay. These cases have been registered across three different police stations: West Mambalam, Nungambakkam, and Vepery. Notably, the charges are not solely against Vijay; several other TVK candidates and local party officials who were involved in organizing the campaign events have also been named in these police complaints. Authorities have clarified that the permissions granted for the campaign were specific and designed for controlled activities. Any modification, such as transforming a permitted event into an extensive roadshow, would necessitate explicit prior authorization from the election commission. The alleged failure to secure this additional approval and proceeding with a large gathering is what triggered the swift response from the flying squad, which is actively monitoring and ensuring compliance with electoral regulations throughout the campaign phase.
MCC Enforcement Vigilance
This development occurs during a critical juncture in the election cycle, as political campaigning intensifies across Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission has adopted a stringent approach to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, with enforcement agencies maintaining close observation of all campaign activities. The objective is to proactively prevent any breaches of election guidelines, including unauthorized public gatherings, the improper utilization of public spaces, and deviations from approved campaign methodologies. While there has been no official statement or response from Vijay or the TVK party regarding the newly filed cases, internal party sources suggest that they are currently reviewing the situation. It remains uncertain whether the party intends to contest the charges or offer further explanations regarding the nature of the event that led to this controversy.
