Iranian Port Request
In a significant disclosure made to India's Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar detailed that Iran had formally requested permission for three
of its ships to dock at Indian ports. This request was swiftly addressed, with the necessary approvals granted by India on March 1st, a mere day after the initial plea. One of these vessels, identified as IRIS LAVAN, subsequently made port in Kochi on March 4th. This marks the first public confirmation from a senior Indian minister regarding Iran's request for such naval access, underscoring India's willingness to provide assistance even as regional maritime security faces growing complexities and uncertainties. The crew of the docked vessel are currently being accommodated within Indian naval facilities, signifying a continued engagement beyond mere port access.
Humanitarian Gesture
Minister Jaishankar emphasized that India viewed its decision to grant port access as the correct and appropriate course of action. He further noted that the Iranian Foreign Minister had extended his country's gratitude for what was perceived as a humane gesture by India.
