Complete Cabin Overhaul
The transformation of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registration VT-ANT, signifies a profound commitment to passenger comfort and global aviation
standards. This isn't a superficial update; it's a comprehensive revitalization undertaken at Boeing's Modification Center in Victorville, California. The process, spanning 45 days and requiring over 12,800 man-hours, involved a complete dismantling of the original interior. Every element, from seating and carpeting to galleys and lavatories, was meticulously replaced and rebuilt. Hundreds of meters of new fabrics, leather, and carpeting were installed, breathing new life into the aircraft. Externally, a specialized team spent over 5,700 hours applying Air India's contemporary livery at a facility in San Bernardino, ensuring the aircraft presents a fresh, modern appearance as it re-enters service.
Three-Class Configuration
A significant enhancement for passengers is the transition from a two-class to a three-class seating arrangement, bringing this aircraft in line with Air India's newer Boeing 787-9 fleet and international premium offerings. Business Class now boasts 20 private suites, thoughtfully laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration. These suites feature sliding doors for enhanced privacy, offer fully flat beds for restful sleep, and provide direct aisle access for convenience. Complementing this is the Premium Economy class, offering 25 seats in a more spacious 2-3-2 layout, delivering increased legroom and recline for those seeking an elevated experience without the full business class fare. The Economy Class has been reconfigured with 205 ergonomically designed seats in a standard 3-3-3 arrangement, now equipped with improved entertainment options and charging facilities.
Advanced Technology & Comfort
Central to the passenger experience upgrade are the state-of-the-art seating and in-flight entertainment systems deployed across all cabins. The aircraft is now equipped with the AVANT Up system from Thales Group, providing passengers with crisp 4K QLED HDR touchscreens at every seat. The selection of globally recognized seat manufacturers, such as RECARO Aircraft Seating, underscores the airline’s dedication to meeting international benchmarks for quality and comfort. Business class suites, in particular, are designed for ultimate relaxation and productivity, incorporating features like privacy doors, built-in vanity mirrors, multiple charging ports, and ambient lighting inspired by traditional Indian motifs, aiming to enhance the overall journey.
Fleet Modernization Program
This extensive retrofit of the Boeing 787-8 is a key component of Air India's ambitious $400 million program aimed at modernizing its entire legacy widebody fleet. The airline plans to extend these comprehensive upgrades to an additional 25 Boeing 787 aircraft over the coming year, with two already undergoing the refurbishment process. Furthermore, plans are in motion to refurbish the airline's Boeing 777-300ER fleet. Upon completion of this extensive fleet modernization by 2027, it is projected that over 300 weekly flights connecting India with destinations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia will offer a significantly improved passenger experience, addressing long-standing criticisms of dated cabin interiors on long-haul routes.
