New Corridor Unveiled
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a monumental undertaking to construct a second expressway linking Pune and Mumbai, a project
anticipated to redefine inter-city travel. This ambitious plan involves a proposed ₹15,000-crore investment to develop a 130-kilometer access-controlled highway. This new route is slated to commence at Chowk in the Raigad district, integrating with the JNPT (Pagote)-Chowk highway. Its trajectory will then extend towards Shivre village near Bhor, where it will seamlessly connect with the Pune Ring Road. The overarching goal is to dramatically reduce the travel duration between these two vital economic centers to approximately 90 minutes. This initiative seeks to alleviate the growing traffic congestion, frequent accidents, and the immense vehicular load currently burdening the existing Pune-Mumbai Expressway, thereby enhancing overall transportation efficiency and safety.
Strategic Connectivity Boost
This state-of-the-art expressway is strategically designed not only to connect Pune and Mumbai more efficiently but also to provide crucial direct links to other significant infrastructure. Notably, the corridor will offer direct connectivity between Pune and the Atal Setu, substantially improving access to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT). This enhanced connectivity is expected to be a game-changer for freight movement and logistics, facilitating smoother transit for goods and services between major industrial and logistics hubs in western Maharashtra. The envisioned eight-lane greenfield corridor is engineered to handle an impressive capacity of nearly three lakh vehicles daily, promising a significant uplift in the movement of both passenger and commercial traffic, thereby bolstering economic activities in the region.
Visionary Infrastructure Plan
The conception of this new expressway stems from a broader vision for infrastructure development in Maharashtra, notably announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in December 2025. At that time, plans for a parallel Pune-Mumbai Expressway were unveiled as part of a comprehensive infrastructure push. Minister Gadkari had articulated that the new expressway would stretch from the Atal Setu-JNPA region to Pune’s Shivare Junction, with the express intent of halving the Pune-Mumbai travel time to just one-and-a-half hours. He further elaborated that the first phase, from Pagote near JNPA to Chowk, had already secured approval. Upon full project completion, the Pune-Mumbai journey would indeed be achievable in 90 minutes, and remarkably, travel between Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru could potentially be reduced to about five-and-a-half hours, showcasing a significant leap in national connectivity.
Broader Highway Network
This Pune-Mumbai project is part of a larger, integrated highway development strategy. The Union government is planning a substantial 1,000-km-long coastal highway designed to link Gujarat and Maharashtra, with this new expressway forming a vital component of this extensive network. The construction is projected to cost approximately ₹10,000 crore and is anticipated to be completed within a three-year timeframe. The expressway will feature a 6-lane, access-controlled design, accommodating a high speed limit of 120 kmph. To ensure efficient traffic flow and minimize environmental impact, the design includes numerous tunnels and bridges. This development is expected to be a significant catalyst for economic growth in the region, creating new employment opportunities and substantially reducing traffic congestion on the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
