Devni Devi, at the age of 59, felt a strong urge to contribute financially to her family and thus began preparing meals for students. However, this endeavor,
launched from her own kitchen, did not receive much positive feedback or support, neither from her extended family nor from acquaintances. She recounts that her efforts were often dismissed as 'chhota kaam,' or insignificant work. Even amidst Patna's sweltering heat, where temperatures could soar to nearly 50°C, she dedicated herself to cooking, driven by a desire to provide students living away from home with the same clean and nourishing food she prepared for her own family. This initial pricing of just ₹20 per meal was not taken seriously by many, leading to hurtful questions directed at her, such as 'Does your husband not earn enough?' These comments deeply affected her husband, causing him to withdraw communication for several months, underscoring the initial resistance she faced despite her noble intentions.
Pandemic Pivot
As Devni Devi's catering service gained traction and her food began to be recognized for its quality, the unforeseen challenge of the pandemic struck. With students returning to their homes, her business faced a significant downturn, leading to a drastic reduction in work. Instead of succumbing to these difficulties, Devni Devi demonstrated remarkable resilience by adapting her operations. She shifted her focus to delivering meals directly to individual households, ensuring that her authentic and delicious food continued to reach customers. This period tested her resolve, but the genuine quality of her cooking gradually reignited demand. The turning point came when one of her sons began sharing photos and videos of her culinary efforts on social media platforms. This online presence garnered substantial appreciation and significantly boosted her visibility and customer base, laying the groundwork for future expansion.
Empire Built on Taste
Devni Devi's culinary venture, which began as a modest tiffin service, has now blossomed into a thriving business with an impressive annual turnover of ₹2.5 crore, providing employment for 15 individuals. Her establishment, now known as 'Amma's Kitchen,' includes a restaurant and a takeaway outlet, a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit. What truly sets her business apart is the unwavering loyalty of her repeat customers. Remarkably, Devni Devi herself possesses limited literacy, being able to write only her name, and she does not engage with smartphones or social media. While her family occasionally shares informal content online without a structured marketing strategy, her clientele continues to grow organically. Her son, Durgesh, attributes this sustained success to the simple yet powerful principles of quality, consistency, and honest effort that his mother embodies. He emphasizes that delicious food and dedicated work, rather than elaborate publicity, have been the cornerstones of their success, offering a profound lesson in business and life.

Beyond her personal success, the 65-year-old Devni Devi actively encourages other women to embark on their own entrepreneurial journeys, urging them, 'Tum to padhe-likhe ho, tum kama kyun nahi lete apna?' – 'You are educated, why don't you earn your own living?' She passionately believes in the critical importance of financial independence for women, enabling them to provide for their families just as men do. Her business is now recognized as one of the top five most ordered food establishments in Patna. Durgesh proudly shares that his mother's life serves as a beautiful illustration of the principle that good work is always rewarded, a lesson that has resonated deeply within their family and has made her an inspirational figure for thousands.
