A New Aviation Hub
The Noida International Airport, often referred to as Jewar Airport, marks a significant expansion of air travel infrastructure in the Delhi-NCR region.
Its inauguration signifies a crucial step towards alleviating the passenger load on Delhi's existing Indira Gandhi International Airport. This state-of-the-art facility has been meticulously constructed to meet global standards, incorporating numerous passenger-centric amenities. The primary objective behind its development is to transform the Jewar region into a preeminent aviation center for Northern India. The initial phase of development has incurred an investment of Rs 11,282 crore. The overall project is slated for completion in multiple stages, with an estimated total cost reaching Rs 29,560 crore. This colossal undertaking sees the concessionaire contributing Rs 6,876 crore to the first phase, while the state government has allocated Rs 4,406 crore towards land acquisition.
Impressive Scale & Capacity
This greenfield airport development stands as one of India's most expansive. In its initial operational phase, the airport is engineered to accommodate an annual flow of 12 million passengers. Looking ahead, the facility is designed with the potential to scale up its capacity significantly, aiming to eventually serve up to 70 million passengers per year. Spanning an impressive 1,334 hectares in its first phase, the airport boasts two distinct entry gates. Passengers will find 48 check-in counters, with 20 of these dedicated to self-baggage drop for expedited processing. Ten boarding gates are equipped with aerobridges, ensuring seamless transitions for travelers. Furthermore, the airport features separate immigration counters for both arrivals and departures, alongside single domestic and international lounges. The baggage handling system includes two carousels for domestic baggage and one for international arrivals.
Enhancing Connectivity
The Noida International Airport is poised to become a vital international gateway for the National Capital Region, promising to substantially bolster the country's aviation infrastructure. Its development is expected to lead to a marked improvement in both domestic and international travel connectivity. By serving as a second major international airport for Delhi-NCR, it will work in tandem with Indira Gandhi International Airport. This collaborative approach is intended to effectively manage and reduce passenger congestion, thereby increasing the overall passenger handling capacity for the region and elevating its status on the global aviation map.
Operational Readiness
Initially, the Noida International Airport at Jewar will operate with a single runway and one passenger terminal. This initial configuration is designed to manage approximately 1.2 crore passengers annually. The runway itself is engineered to facilitate up to 30 flights per hour, a testament to its advanced design. The aircraft stands are prepared to accommodate 10 planes directly connected via aerobridges, with an additional capacity for 15 aircraft to be accessed via bus services. The runway measures a substantial 3,900 meters, capable of handling large, wide-body aircraft. It is further equipped with modern navigational aids, including an Instrument Landing System and sophisticated airfield lighting, ensuring safe and efficient operations around the clock, regardless of weather conditions.
Sustainable Design
Designed with a vision for the future and a commitment to environmental responsibility, the Noida International Airport aims to operate as a net-zero emissions facility. This ambitious goal will be achieved through the implementation of energy-efficient technologies and sustainable operational practices throughout its lifecycle. Commercial Operations Begin
Commercial flight operations are anticipated to commence no earlier than May, subject to the completion of all mandatory regulatory clearances. These approvals are essential before airlines can initiate ticket sales and officially launch their services. Currently, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express have confirmed their intentions to operate domestic flights from the new airport. The initial network is expected to link Noida with major Indian cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, and Dehradun. However, the definitive flight routes will be finalized and announced only after all necessary security approvals are secured.
Multi-Modal Transport Hub
Strategically positioned along the Yamuna Expressway, the Noida International Airport is being developed as an integrated multi-modal transport hub. The design emphasizes seamless connectivity, incorporating road, rail, and metro networks, alongside regional transit systems. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure efficient movement for both passengers and cargo. While immediate public transport options are not yet fully established, the airport has forged partnerships with UP Roadways, Mahindra Mobility, Uber, and Rapido to enhance last-mile connectivity and provide convenient travel solutions for passengers.
Phased Expansion Plans
The airport's expansion is meticulously planned across several phases to accommodate the anticipated growth in passenger traffic. Phase 2, projected for completion by 2030, aims to elevate the annual passenger capacity to 3 crore. This phase will also see the addition of crucial infrastructure, including a second runway and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. Phase 3, targeted for 2034, intends to increase passenger capacity to 5 crore, complemented by the construction of a second terminal building. By the final Phase 4 in 2036, the airport is expected to handle an impressive 7 crore passengers annually. This expansion will be supported by the development of cargo hub facilities and the establishment of aerospace manufacturing hubs, further solidifying its position as a comprehensive aviation ecosystem.
Cargo Operations
The airport is outfitted with robust cargo infrastructure, including a Multi-Modal Cargo Hub that integrates a dedicated Cargo Terminal with specialized logistics zones. Alongside the commencement of passenger operations in the first phase, the cargo terminal is also being made operational. Initially, this terminal is equipped to handle 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of freight annually. However, there is significant scope for expansion, with plans to increase this capacity to 18 lakh metric tonnes, underscoring the airport's role in facilitating regional and international trade.
