Timings Revised Due to Heat
In response to an unrelenting heatwave that has pushed temperatures beyond 40 degrees Celsius, educational institutions across Noida and Ghaziabad have
implemented a significant adjustment to their operational hours. Classes will now commence at 7:30 AM and conclude by 12:30 PM, a change that affects schools affiliated with various educational boards including CBSE, CISCE, IB, and the UP Board. This decision, announced by the district magistrates of both cities, is a direct effort to safeguard students from the harsh effects of the peak afternoon sun and the prevailing 'loo' conditions, which are characteristic of severe heatwaves. Schools are mandated to strictly adhere to these new timings and ensure that essential facilities like drinking water are readily available. Furthermore, all outdoor activities are to be suspended during the most intense periods of the day to minimize student exposure to the extreme heat.
Health Advisories Issued
Prior to the shift in school schedules, both the Noida and Ghaziabad district administrations had proactively issued public advisories concerning the heatwave. These advisories strongly encouraged residents to maintain adequate hydration, limit their exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, and take necessary precautions to prevent heatstroke. The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the hot weather conditions are likely to persist for the upcoming days, despite the possibility of light rainfall. On Monday, the maximum temperature recorded was 42.3 degrees Celsius, which was significantly higher than the normal temperature for this time of year. The day's temperature is anticipated to hover around 42 degrees Celsius on Tuesday as well, underscoring the severity of the current weather situation and the need for continued vigilance.
Parental and Educator Reactions
The decision to revise school timings has been met with appreciation from parents who expressed concerns about their children's well-being. Many parents noted that by the time school concluded in the afternoon, the sun's intensity was already quite severe, leading to children returning home exhausted and complaining of headaches. They view the early closure as a crucial and necessary step to mitigate these issues. Particular concern was raised for younger students, who are considered more vulnerable to the extreme weather conditions and may have difficulty tolerating the heat. The early closure is seen as a vital safety measure, especially for those who rely on school vans or buses for their commute. However, some educators have voiced reservations, pointing out that frequent changes in school schedules can potentially disrupt the rhythm of teaching and learning, making it challenging to complete the syllabus within the stipulated time. While acknowledging the necessity of such measures during severe weather, they advocate for a more consistent approach that reserves stricter interventions for genuinely extreme conditions rather than minor weather fluctuations.
