The incident left an indelible mark on the team and its devoted fanbase, prompting this special recognition. Captain Virat Kohli articulated the team's desire to honor these departed supporters, stating that jersey number 11 will serve as a powerful symbol of their unity with the affected families and a constant reminder of the paramount importance of ensuring safety and security at all sporting events. The selection of number 11 also carries a personal connection, as it was the jersey worn by the late Indian cricketer Anil Kumble, a respected mentor to RCB during its formative years, who was also a fervent advocate for fan safety.
Enhanced Security Protocols
With the upcoming IPL matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB has rolled out a comprehensive suite of enhanced security measures and operational adjustments, directly addressing the tragic stampede incident that claimed eleven lives last year. CEO Rajesh Menon expressed profound gratitude to the Karnataka government and police for their collaborative efforts. All arrangements are meticulously managed under strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as mandated by the Karnataka High Court, in conjunction with the Karnataka State Cricket Association and under the guidance of state police. Emergency planning is now directly overseen by the state association, with all necessary permissions, including barricade installations, streamlined through them, ensuring adherence to SOPs is non-negotiable this season. Furthermore, a significant technological upgrade involves the deployment of AI-driven CCTV surveillance systems, providing real-time alerts on crowd density, queue formations, and potential risks, facilitating immediate coordination with authorities. The Commissioner's office will also have access to live feeds for continuous monitoring of both internal and external stadium environments. Crowd movement has been optimized through the reconfiguration of all access points, following police recommendations, and gates will now open four hours prior to match commencement to prevent last-minute congestion.
Digital Ticketing & Fan Access
To streamline entry and improve the fan experience, RCB is championing a predominantly digital ticketing system for the IPL 2026 season, with an estimated 80-90 percent of tickets being mobile-based and available through the team's official platform. In a move designed to further support attendees, every ticket holder will receive complimentary travel on the Namma Metro, including convenient parking options at metro stations. To alleviate traffic congestion around the venue, private vehicle drop-offs directly near the stadium will be prohibited. In another thoughtful measure, RCB has confirmed that there will be no large-scale promotional events or 'unboxing' ceremonies held at the stadium this season, shifting the primary focus to match operations and ensuring a secure environment for all. As a touching tribute to the eleven fans who tragically passed away in the previous year's stampede, the franchise has committed to permanently reserving 11 seats at the stadium, which will remain empty for every match. Additionally, players will wear the special jersey number 11 during their practice sessions and will don black armbands on the designated commemorative day. Regarding the delay in a public statement, Menon explained that the matter is sub judice and the team has been fully cooperating with all investigative agencies. RCB is also scheduled to host two home matches in Raipur, acknowledging the support provided by the state authorities there.
