A Solemn Tribute
Following a deeply unfortunate incident that claimed the lives of 11 fans outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium last year, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru
franchise has announced a series of heartfelt gestures. These tributes aim to honor the memory of those lost during the chaos that ensued after the team's maiden IPL victory parade on June 4th. The franchise acknowledges the criticism received for crowd management during the celebrations and is taking these steps to show solidarity and respect for the affected families. The initiative reflects a commitment to remembering the fans who are considered an integral part of the RCB family, ensuring their memory is kept alive throughout the upcoming season and beyond.
Honoring with Jersey No. 11
As a significant part of this tribute, the players of Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be seen wearing jersey number 11 during their training sessions on match days throughout the IPL season. This dedicated practice attire is a visible symbol of remembrance and solidarity. RCB CEO Rajesh Menon clarified that while the players will don the No. 11 jerseys for pre-match practice, they will not be worn during the actual games. This distinction emphasizes that the gesture is specifically for remembrance during their preparation and not for competitive play. Additionally, the team will be wearing black armbands on match days as a further mark of respect and mourning for the 11 fans who tragically passed away.
Permanent Memorial Seats
Beyond the on-field tributes, Royal Challengers Bengaluru is establishing a lasting memorial at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The franchise is in the process of designating 11 permanent seats within the stadium to be forever reserved in honor of the 11 fans who lost their lives. This permanent fixture serves as a constant reminder and a way to ensure that these supporters are always symbolically present at the stadium. The decision to dedicate these seats is a profound gesture, ensuring that the memory of the fans who tragically perished will be perpetuated within the very grounds where cricket is played. The defending champions are set to commence their season on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
