Tragic Collapse in Mulund
In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Mulund, north-east Mumbai, a section of an under-construction metro rail line 4 experienced a structural failure,
leading to a devastating collapse. The catastrophic event occurred around noon on Saturday along the busy LBS Road, near the Johnson and Johnson factory. A substantial cement slab, part of the parapet wall of the girder bridge, detached and plummeted onto the road below. Tragically, this falling debris directly impacted a passing autorickshaw, completely crushing the three-wheeler. A car was also significantly damaged by the falling material. The immediate aftermath saw emergency services and authorities converge on the scene to manage the relief operations and secure the area. The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed the collapse happened near pier 196 of the metro line construction, adjacent to the Mulund Fire Station, and has initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the structural failure.
Victims and Injuries
The collapse resulted in a tragic loss of life and left three individuals with injuries, some critical. The deceased has been identified by fire brigade officials as Ramdhan Yadav. Among the injured are Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, aged 45, Mahendra Pratap Yadav, aged 52, and Deepa Ruhiya, aged 40. The condition of Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav is reported as critical, and he is currently receiving intensive care in the ICU of a nearby hospital. Mahendra Pratap Yadav and Deepa Ruhiya are reported to be in stable condition. This stark reminder of the human cost underscores the critical importance of safety measures during large-scale infrastructure projects, especially in densely populated urban environments where the risk of incidental damage and harm to the public is significantly amplified.

Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad expressed deep concern, questioning the perceived devaluation of Mumbaikars' lives and suggesting that authorities are prioritizing project publicity over ensuring public safety. She called for immediate accountability from the responsible parties, raising alarms about potential lapses in safety standards at the construction site, particularly given the high volume of traffic that regularly uses the affected road. Gaikwad also raised questions about whether quality and technical safety standards are being compromised in the rush to complete metro projects, emphasizing that repeated announcements of inquiries after such unfortunate events are insufficient. She stressed that while development is essential, it must not come at the expense of citizens' lives, demanding strict action against those found negligent.
