Early Days of Green
Before becoming the bustling Eco Park known today, the area in New Town was largely undeveloped marshland. Early associates recall a landscape dominated
by wetlands and an absence of trees. The initial development saw the establishment of basic gates and a small section known as Maser Bela. Planting initiatives began to shape the terrain, with the gradual introduction of features like a rose garden and a rainforest. During this nascent phase, visitor numbers were moderate, typically ranging from three to five thousand on weekends, with a notable increase during the winter months from November to March. The administrative team was small, consisting of a curator, a manager, and a few office workers. Despite the limited infrastructure, the park's potential was evident, as demonstrated by a single-day visitor count of around one lakh on December 25th, which required significant crowd management.
Growth and Expansion
As visitor numbers escalated, the park underwent rapid infrastructure development to accommodate the influx. Managing a daily flow of 1,000 to 1,500 cars became a significant logistical challenge, necessitating careful planning for parking facilities. The park's transformation continued with the establishment of various themed zones and the enhancement of its central water body. Key attractions that quickly gained popularity included the charming toy train, a perennial favorite for families, and the Eco-cart, offering convenient park navigation. Themed gardens, such as a Japanese garden and the Prajapati garden, further enriched the visitor experience. A notable infrastructure development was the construction of a bridge to the previously island, which was once accessed only by boat. This period also saw Eco Park evolving into a venue for larger events and public gatherings, including displays by industrial houses, solidifying its role as a community meeting point.
A Modern Urban Oasis
Today, Eco Park stands as one of India's largest urban parks, meticulously designed around a vast central water body. It offers a diverse array of attractions and activities catering to a wide range of visitors. The park provides spaces for leisure, entertainment, and active pursuits, drawing thousands weekly. For many, it's a cherished spot for daily activities like evening walks, enjoying the scenery, and engaging in various recreational options. Visitors can explore areas like the solar dome, admire an Eiffel Tower replica, enjoy refreshments, and even play golf. The presence of a zoo adds to its appeal for families. Eco Park successfully balances the desire for active engagement with the need for tranquil relaxation by the water, offering a holistic experience that reflects the dynamic growth and evolving cultural landscape of Kolkata.
