Humble Beginnings
At the age of 59, Devni Devi felt a strong urge to contribute financially to her family. She decided to start a tiffin service from her own kitchen, preparing
meals for students. However, this endeavor was met with considerable disdain, both from within her extended family and from the wider community. It was frequently dismissed as insignificant 'chhota kaam,' a notion she found particularly disheartening. Despite the scorching Patna summers, with temperatures soaring to nearly 50°C, she dedicated herself to cooking. Her motivation stemmed from a genuine concern that students living away from home were not receiving the wholesome, home-cooked meals they deserved, prompting her to prepare food akin to what she served her own family. This commitment to quality and care soon began to resonate with the students, whose positive feedback and word-of-mouth testimonials started to build her customer base.
Overcoming Doubts
Devni Devi's life had been largely defined by domestic duties within a large joint family, where her extensive time spent in the kitchen was often perceived as mere household chores rather than valuable work. The family's relocation to Patna for their children's education brought increased expenses, and she sought a way to alleviate the financial burden. Being uneducated, her options seemed limited. A pivotal moment occurred when she observed the poor quality of food provided in the tiffin box of a medical student, which solidified her resolve to offer better alternatives. She began by charging a modest ₹20 for her meals, a price that unfortunately led some relatives and even family members to question her husband's earning capacity. These disparaging remarks deeply affected her husband, causing him to withdraw his support for months.
Pandemic Pivot
As Devni Devi's business gradually gained traction and began to show promise, the unforeseen arrival of the pandemic presented a significant challenge. With students returning to their homes, her tiffin service faced a drastic reduction in demand. Undeterred, Devni Devi adapted her strategy, shifting to delivering meals directly to individual households. The genuine quality and authentic taste of her food, which had always been her hallmark, led to a resurgence in demand. The turning point came when one of her sons, a communications professional, began sharing photos and videos of her culinary efforts on social media. This online exposure garnered significant appreciation and dramatically amplified her popularity, attracting a new wave of customers.
Empire Realized
Today, Devni Devi's venture boasts an impressive annual turnover of ₹2.5 crore and provides employment for 15 individuals. What began as a modest tiffin service has blossomed into a well-regarded restaurant named 'Amma's Kitchen,' complete with a dedicated takeaway outlet. The most striking aspect of her business is the exceptional loyalty of her repeat customers. Despite her limited literacy, being able to only sign her name, and her lack of smartphone or social media usage, her clientele continues to grow organically. Her family occasionally posts content online without a formal marketing strategy, yet the inherent quality of her food drives consistent demand. Her son Durgesh attributes this success to an unwavering commitment to quality, consistency, and diligent work, emphasizing that good food speaks for itself.
Inspiring Others
Devni Devi now actively encourages other women to pursue their own entrepreneurial paths, often asking educated women, 'You are educated, why don't you earn for yourself?' Her core belief is in the paramount importance of women achieving financial independence, enabling them to support their families just as men do. Her son, Durgesh, proudly shares that their establishment is among the top five most frequently ordered food places in Patna. He highlights the profound lesson learned from his mother's journey: that honorable and quality work always yields rewards. Devni Devi's life story serves as a powerful testament and an inspiring example for countless individuals, demonstrating the immense potential that lies within dedication and a commitment to excellence.
